Description

OTEY R. KIRKPATRICK, OF FOR-'1 "WORTH, TEXA$, ASSIGNOROF ONE-THIRD IO 0. A. PUOKET'I AND ONE-THIRD TO C. M. MITCHELL, OF FOR-T WORTH TEXAS.
W BENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 23, 1921. serial No. 494,622.
T 0 all who 12bit may concern:
Be it known that I, OTEY R. KIRKPAT- RICK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Forth Worth, in the County of Tarrant, and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification,
My invention relates to wrenches and more particularly to quick adjustable wrenches; and the object is to provide wrenches which will have the required power and which may be quickly adjusted to different sizes of nuts or heads to be turned and to provide devices by which the movable jaw can be instantly adjusted to different positions. Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description and the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of face view of the wrench. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the body, showing the location of the operating parts.
Similar characters of reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views,
The wrench has a body member 1 which has a fixed jaw 2 integral. therewith. .The body 1 has a transverse opening 3 for permitting the moving of a movable jaw and alsohas a longitudinal opening 4 for adjustment purposes. The wrench is provided with a movable jaw 5 and this movable jaw is integral with a shank 6 at right angles to the jaw. The shank 6 moves in the transverse opening 3. The body 1 has a slot 7 and a stud 8 is rigid with the shank 6 and constitutes a handle for moving the movable jaw. The shank 6 has an opening 9 in which the stud 8 is secured. The stud 8 moves in the slot 7. The opening 3 constitutes a guideway for the shank 6. An additional guide is provided for the shank 6. The interior wall of the opening 3 has a rib or tongue 10 and the shank 11 has a groove 9. The rib 10 runs in the groove 9, In this manner the movable jaw must move in straight lines and lost motion is prevented.
The shank 6 and jaw 5 are locked in any position in which they may be adjusted by a spring-actuated dog 11 which has a yokelike form. The shank 6 has ratchet teeth 12 and the dog 11 has teeth 13 which engage the teeth 12 of the shank 6. The object is to lock the shank in any required position. The wrench is provided with a handle 14 which is pivotally connected to the body 1 by a pivot bolt 15. The handle 14 has shoulders 16 and the dog 11 has arms 17 and 18 which move on the reduced portion of the handle and are adapted to' be pressed down on the shoulders 16 but are normally held away from these shoulders by springs 19 which are seated in the ends of the arms 17 and 18 and in the shoulders 16 of the handle. The springs 19 press and hold the teeth 13 in mesh with the teeth 12 of the shank 6 and so look the shank in position. The dog 11 is moved for locking and releasing purposes by a stud 20 which is rigid with arm 17, the arm 17 having an opening21 to receive the stud 20. A. curved and relatively largeslot 22 is made in the body 1 for the movement of the stud 20. The dog 11 must vibrate or mo've as the handle 14 moves by reason of the arms 17 and 18 engaging snugly the reduced end of the handle. A spring 23 is seated in the side of the dog 11 and in the interior wall of the slot 4. The slot 4 is wider at the part adjacent to the shank 6 to permit movement of the dog '11 for adjustment purposes. The spring 23 cooperates with the handle 14 in adjusting the dog 11.
In operation, first move the stud 20 which releases the dog 11 from the shank 6. Then turn the wrench on the side with the movable jaw down if the jaws are to be moved further apart, but turn the fixed jaw down if the jaws are to be brought closer together. The jaw will move by gravity.
Various changes in the sizes, proportions, and construction of the various parts may be made without departing from my invention as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim, is,-
1. A wrench having a body provided with transverse and longitudinal slots there through and a jaw integral therewith, a movable jaw having an integral shank at. right angles thereto and movable in said transverse slot and ratchet teeth formed'on said shank,
Patented May 2,1922.
a handle projected into said longitudinal slot and pivotally connected to said body, a spring actuated dog movable longitudinally on and with said handle and provided with teeth for engaging the teeth of said shank for locking said shank in fixed positions, and a stud rigid with said dog for moving said dog longitudinally on said handle.
2. A Wrench having a body provided with transverse and longitudinal slots therethrough and a jaw integral therewith, a movable j aw having a shank at right angles thereto; and movable in said transverse slot and ratchet teeth formed on said shank, a handle projected into said longitudinal slot and pivotally connected to said body, a spring-actuated dog mounted in said lon gitudinal slot and provided with arms engaging the end of said lever and movable 0n and with said lever, said body having a transverse slot therein, a stud projected in said slot and rigid with said shank for ad justing said shank and movable jaw, ratchet teeth formed on said shank, and teeth formed on said dog for engaging said ratchet arger? teeth for locking said shank andmovable jaw in fixed positions,
3. A wrench having a body provided with transverse and longitudinal slots therethrough and a aw integral therewith, a movable jaw having a shank at right angles thereto and movable in said transverse slot, said body having a tongue on the inner wall of said transverse slot and said shank having a groove in which said tongue moves, a handle pivotally connected to said body and movable in said longitudinal slot, a springactuated dog having arms engaging the end of said lever and movable longitudinally thereon, ratchet teeth formed on said shank, teeth formed on said dog for engaging said ratchet teeth for looking said shank and movable jaw in fixed positions and for releasing the same, said body having a curved slot in one side, and a headed stud projecting through said curved slot and rigid with one arm of said dog for actuating said dog.
In testimony whereof, ll set my hand this th day of July, 1921.
OTEY ll. KIRKPATRICK.
