To all whom it may concern:
Bait known that I, WILBUR HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Harrison and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.-
This invention relates to an improvement in wrenches, and more particularlyto devices of this sort such as are intended to be used either as pipe or nut wrenches and are so constructed that a quick closing action of the jaws can be accomplished. I
An object of my invention is to provide a wrench which has the movable jaw thereof held by ratchet pawls working against a toothed bar'so that the movable jaw may be manually moved with the pawls riding over the ratchet'te'eth to a relation that the jaws close properly upon the nut or pipe which is to be turned, and to provide pawl releasing means to throw the pawls out of the engagement with the teeth of the bar so that the movable-jaw maybe returned to-open the wrench. I I With the above and other objects in View, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter set forth in connection with the drawings and then more particularly pointed out in the claims.

A rack bar 1 is extended from the handle 2 and at its outer end has a jaw 3 fixed thereon, this jaw being recessed as at 4: at one side of the bar 1, and at the opposite side may be plain as at 5, it being a purpose to provide the recessed side for the reception of a pipe when the wrench is used as a pipe wrench, and the plain jaw to be used in gripping and turning nuts and bolts A movable jaw member 6 has the side projecting jaw portions 7 and 8 which are positioned with respect to the jaw portions of the head 3 in relations to act therewith, a
roughing shoe 9 having the teeth 10 thereon being mounted in conjunction with the extension 7 to close adjacent to the recess 1 and thus provide a gripping face for the extension 7. This movable jaw member 6 has extensions 11 and 12 which lie closely adjacent to the side edges of the bar 1 and plates 13 and 14 are secured across between these sections on eachside of the bar 1 so that a squared or rectangular opening is provided for the bar and the movable jaw member '6 is held against'lateral shifting or playing movement thereon. J
The side edges ofthe bar 1 are in their middle portions provided with the ratchet teeth as indicated at 15 and 16, which teeth are so formed that the biting faces thereof are disposed toward the head 3. The extensions l1 and 12 are provided with the notches as indicated at 17 and 18, andthe toothed pawls 19 and 20 are fitted in these notches 17 and 18 to be capable of endwise sliding movement to have the teeth thereof brought into and out of biting engagement with the teeth at 15 and 16, on the said edges of the bar 1. Coiled springs 21 and 22 are mounted back of the pawl members 19 and 20 to normally urge the same inwardly so that the teeth will engage with the teeth of the bar 1, and thus while the'pawls may rise to ride over the teeth of the bar, the movable jaw 6 is held against casual movement "in a direction from the head 3. v
r A sleeve 23 is loosely fitted around thebar 1 to be capable of turning movement thereon and a hooked retaining member 24 is carried by the plate 14 to extend down into the sleeve 23 and engage over a projection 25 so that this sleeve 23 will be held to move with the jaw 6, and to move the jaw as movement may be imparted to same. The extensions 11 and 12 are notched out adjacent to the bar 1 to receive the end of the sleeve 23 and this sleeve has the notches 26 and 27 formed therein with the intermediate portions arranged to act as stops to complete revolution of the sleeve 23. Wedge shaped shaped. pins and consequently the pawls against the tension of the springsQl and 22, thus releasing the pawls from the holding positions and permitting back movement on the movable aw member 6.
In the use of the wrench, the parts will be assembled as has been set forth, and as is shown in the drawings. Then by placing the jaw member 3 so that a pipe is received in the recess d at one side or a nut or bolt is fitted against the plain jaw 5 at the opposite side, and forcing the movable jaw 6 to bear tightly against the pipe or the nut, the
desired holding action will be accomplished and the part engaged by the wrench may be turned. When the wrench is to be released, the sleeve 23 will be turned over to the right and the cam portions 30 and 31 will engage with the wedge shaped pins 28 and 29 to thus release the pawls l9 and 20 after which the movable aW may be brought back by exerting pulling tension on the sleeve 23 or by grasping the jaw 6. Immediately the sleeve 23 is again turned back to relieve the pawls from the loosening pressure exerted by the cam portions 30 and 81 of the sleeve, these pawls will again come into engagement with the teeth of the bar and the wrench may be subsequently fitted in other operative relation as has been herein described.
While in the foregoing disclosure and description I have set forth only one specific form of the device, it will be understood that the form of the jaws might be varied, that other manner of pawl holding means might be employed, and that a number of changes and modifications might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence l do not wish to be limited to the exact disclosure but only to such points as may be set forth in the claims,

A wrench comprising a shank, a stationary jaw, an adjustable jaw, teeth formed upon said shank, a sliding tooth gripping pawl mounted upon each side of said adjustable jaw and engaging said teeth, an operating sleeve carried by said adjustable jaw and cooperating therewith, said adjustable sleeve provided with cam portions upon the inner ends thereof, and said pawls provided with projecting pins engaging said cam portions and adapted to move said pawls out of engagement with the teeth formed upon said shank as said sleeve is rotated for permitting the free sliding movement of said adjustable jaw upon said shank.
2. A wrench of the class described comprising a shank, a stationary jaw, an adjustable jaw, said shank provided with a plurality of gripping teeth formed upon the sides thereof, a spring pressed pawl carried within each side of said adjustable jaw and adapted to normally grip said teeth formed upon said shank, each pawl provided with a projecting wedge pin, a rotatable sleeve carried bv said shank and cooperating with said adjustable jaw, said sleeve provided with notched portions formed upon the inner end thereof for receiving said pins, and said notched portions provided with cam ends for cooperating with said pins and causing said pins to move transversely of said adjustable jaw as said sleeve is rotated and consequently draw said pawls out of engagement with the teeth formed upon said 1 shank for permitting said adjustable jaw to freely slide upon said shank to the desired adjusted position.
