To all whom it may bonoerm. r
Be it known that I, .TURVE'1'1 B. Hannah, a citizenof the United States, residin v at Alba, in thecounty of Bradford and tate of Pennsylvania, have-inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in' Itatchet- Wrenches, ofvwhich the following is a specification, -reference being had to the accompanying drawings. This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches, and more particularly to that class generally known as ratchet wrenches. v 1 An object of this invention is the provision of a ratchet wrenchfconsisting of a pair of'pivotally conneeted jaws, the jaws being adapted to support arotatable head therebetween, the periphery of the head be ingforme'd with a plurality of ratchetteeth," and the jaws carrying spring pressedpa-wls or dogs on opposite sides of the head for en'- gagement w1th.the 'tee th,y to prevent relative movement of the head in one .direction with relationto thejaw s.-
A further object of this invention n the provision of a Wrench of this character'in which the jaws are adjustably connected to receive rotatable heads of various sizes for use in connection-with various sizes of work to be turned by the wrench.'
A still further object of this invention. is the provision of a ratchet wrench in which a plurality of interchangeable rotatable heads are provided, whereby the wrench is adapted for various uses, and for engagement with difi'erent kinds and sizes ofobjects.
lVith' these and other objects in view, my.
inventionconsists in the novel construction,-
combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure '1 is a side elevation partly in section of iny'improv'ed wrench, showing the same before the ja'ws have been tightly closed against the periphery of the rotatable .head; Fig.- 2 is'a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an inner edge View OfOi'lGOf the members of the wrench Fig.
4 is an elevation showing an alternative form of-rota-table head andFig. 5 is an elevati0nshowing stillanother alternative form of head 7 RATGHET-WRENCH.
1 Referring more particularly to the vdraw- 1ngs,.the numerals l and 2 designate a pair Patented Nana-1914. Application filed April 27, 1914, serial 834,836". I 4
of pivotally connected members Whichare curved at one end to form handles :3, and
.are formed at their opposite end with sub I I stantially semi-circular jaws 4. I Abolt5 is threadably mounted in the member 2 adj a5;
cent the jaw thereof, the bolt being providedad acent: one-end with a flatfangularpor-s tion 6, and an enlarged flat head 7. The
other member 1 has a "transverse slot 8 formedtlierein which is enlarged atits op posite ends ,as at 9, the restricted portion .of the slot being substantially the same .width as the thickness of the, flattened portion 6 and the head 7 of the bolt, so that the flattened head of the bolt .may be passed through the restricted portion of the slot, whereupon themember 1 may be moved so that the flattened portion 6 of the bolt is dis posed in one of the enlargedends ofthe slot to pivotally connect; the members together. a,
It .will be understood that the member 1f may be mounted on the bolt 5 so that'either enlarged end of the slot therein engages the bolt, and in this manner, the distance between the jaws 4 may be adjusted. Se- Y cured to the opposite faces of each'of thejaws areithe guide plates 10, the inner edges of the plates projecting beyond the innerj edgesgf the jaws, each of the plates being formed intermediate of its,ends, with a transverse slot 11. Each of the jaws 4 has formed in its inner edge, a transversely extending elongated recess 12 in which a dog. 1
.is slidably seated, each of thedogs havmg reduced extensions 14 which )roject through the slots in the plates 10, whereby the dogs are guided in the jaws. Disposed between the inner facesof the dogs and the base wall of the recesses, are springs 15 which normally force the dogs outwardly, to dispose the outer ends of the same beyond the inner edges of the jaws. A rotary head 16 is adapted .for engagement between the jaws, 4 of the wrench, the projecting edges of-the plates 10 engaging the opposite faces of the head to maintain the same in posi tion between the jaws. The. periphery of the head i's-provided with a series of ratchet teeth 17 with which the springpressed dogs engageatonrevent rotation'of the head in. onedirection withrelation to the jaws. To
secure. the jaws in any desired adjusted posi- The inner edge of each aw at lts inner end is provided with a pair of notches 19,
the side Walls of which are beveled and sharpened as at 20, so that a. wire (not shown) may be placed within registering notches in the members, and upon movement of the handles toward each other, the wire will be severed by the sharpened walls of the notches. It will be seen from the drawing, that one of the notches in each of the jaws will register when the bolt 5 is dis-- posed in either end of the slot 8, so that the wrench may be used to cut wire regardless of the adjusted position of the jaws. The inner end of the handle of the member 2 is formed into a screw driver 21, and the inner endof the handle of the member 1 is formed into a tack puller 22.
In the practical use of my improved wrench, the slot in the head 16 is engaged with a nut 'or other similar work (not shown) to be turned, and when the wrench is rotated in the direction of the arrow, as shown in Fig. l of the drawing, the head is turned with the wrench to rotate the work;
but when the wrench is turned in the opposite direction, the dogs 13 ride over the ratchet teeth -17 on the periphery of the head, so that the handles of the wrench may be oscillated back and forth to turn the work home or remove the same from-engagement with its support.
It will be seen that the jaws of the wrench may be adjusted by removing the head 16 therefrom and turning the bolt 5 until the flattened portion 6 thereof is disposed in the same plane as theslot 8 in the member 1, whereupon the member may be moved so that the flattened portion6 of the bolt passes through the restricted portion of the slot 8 to the enlarged portion of the slot at its opposite end, and in this position, the bolt may be turned sothat the flattened portion 6 thereof is disposed across the end of the restricted ortion of the slot. It will be seen that t esprings 15 normally force the dogs 13 inwardly of the jaws, so that the reduced extensions 14 of the dogs engage the inner walls of the slots in the plates 10, the springs allowing the dogs to retract when the wrench is turned in the direction which allows the dogs to ride over the beveled faces of the ratchet teeth of the head.
In Fig. 4fof the drawing, I have illus-- trated an alternative form of rotatable head, in which the head 23 is formed with a tapered slot 24, to provide a so-called alli gator wrench, the head being provided with ratchet teeth 25 on its periphery tor engagement with the dogs '13 carried in the jaws. In Fig. '5 I have illustrated still another alternative form of rotatable head, in which the head 26 is provided with a plurality of notches 27 in its edge, the notches being of various widths, to receive difi'erent sizes of wire, the head 26 being also provided with ratchet teeth 28- on its periphery so that the head 26 may. be rotated in the jaws of the wrench 'to splice a pair of wires (not shown which may be'connected in any of the notches 27 I Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to secure and claim by Letters Patent, is
1.- In a wrench, the combination with pivotally connected members, each of said members having a jaw at one end and a handle at its opposite end, a rotary head mounted between said-jaws, and spring pressed dogs carried upon the inner edges of said jaws for engagement with the eriphery of said head to prevent rotation t ereof in one direction with relation to the wrench.
2. In a wrench, the combination of pivotally connected members, ,each of the members having a handle portion at one end and I a jaw at its opposite end, plates connected to the opposite faces of said jaws,'a rotatable head mounted between the jaws, said plates projecting beyond the inner edges of said jaws to engage the opposite'faces of said head, the periphery ofsaid head being formed with a series of ratchet teeth, and
pressed dogsmounted in the inner edges 0 said jaws on opposite sides of said head for engagement with the ratchet teeth thereof, .to prevent rotation of the head in one direction with relation to the" wrench.
3'. In a wrench,'the combination of pivotallyconnected members, each of the members being formed with a handle at one end and a jaw at its opposite end,plates secured to the o posite faces of the jaws, the inner edges 0 said plates projectin inwardly of the inner edges of the jaws, t e inner edge of each jaw having an elongated recess formed therein, each of said plates having an elongated slot formed therein which registers with the recess in its respective jaw, spring pressed dogs mounted in said recesses and having reduced extensions for engagement in the slots in said plates, a rotatable head'mounted between the jaws,'the project- 'ing edges of said plates-engaging the oppopair of members each having 'a jaw at one end and a handle at its opposite end, one
of 'said members having a bolt projecting therethrough adjacent its jaw, said bolt hav mg a flattened portion adjacent one end thereof and a flattened head, the other memher having a transverse slot formed therein adjacentits 'aw, the opposite ends of said slot being eni said bolt being of greater width than the width of the restricted whereby either enlarged end of the slot may "be engaged around the flattened portion of the bolt so that the members may be pivotally connected together in different ad justed positions, between said jaws, and means for preventing rotation of said head in one direction.
I n a wrench, the combination with piv the ratchet teeth on the periphery of said arged, the flattened portion of portion of the slot,
a rotatable head disposed head to prevent rotation thereof in one direction with relation to the wrench.
6. In a wrench, the combination with pivotally connected members, each of said members having a jaw at one end and a handle at its opposite end, a rotaryv head having its periphery formed with a, series of ratchet teeth mounted between said jaws, each of said jaws having an elongated recess formed in its inner edge, spring pressed dogs mounted in said recesses for engagement with the ratchet teeth on the periphery of said head toprevent rotation t with relation to the wrench, and means conereof in one direction nected to said jaws for holding said head in operative position there-between and to prevent acciden-tal disengagement of said dogs from said jaws.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix'my signature in the presence of two witnesses. TURVETT B. HARLAN. Witnesses: e
