Description

AUBE.
PIPE WRENCH.
N FILED APPLICA 0. 1913. 1,134,499, Patented Apr. 6, 1915.
ARMIDOS J. AUBE, 0F SAUL'I STE. MARIE, MICHIGAN.
PIPE-WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6, 1915.
Application filed March 20, 1913. Serial No. 755,783.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AnMinos J. AUBE, citizen of the United States, residing at Sault Ste. Marie, in the county of Chippewa and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piperenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches, more particularly to the class of pipe wrenches, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the eliiciency and utility of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device which may be quickly adjusted to engage pipes of varying diameters, and which will firmly grip the same when applied.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device of this character wherein provision is made for causing one of the gripping jaws to be automatically adjusted to adapt itself to varying diameters of pipes.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section elevation of the improved wrenches. Fig. 2 represents the movable jaw and its adjustable grip member in perspective. Fig. 8 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved wrench comprises a stock 10 extended at one end into a hand grip 11 and with a stationary jaw 12 at the other end, the stationary jaw having pipe engaging teeth 13, while the stock 10 is provided with a plurality of pawl receiving ratchet teeth 11. Movably disposed upon the stock 10 is a movable jaw 15 having a plurality of ratchet teeth 16 near its outer end to engage in the ratchet teeth 14 of the stock 10. The forward face of the jaw 15 extends 0bliquely to the longitudinal plane of the stock and is provided in the oblique face with a guideway or channel 17. The jaw 15 is likewise provided with a longitudinal opening or passage 18 providing communication between the rear portion of the jaw and the channel 17. Slidably disposed upon the oblique face of the jaw is a plate 19 having pipe engaging teeth 20 in its outer face and a rearwardly directed rib 21 which engages in the channel 17. The rib is provided with a longitudinal slot 22 through which a pin 23 extends, the pin being inserted through the body of the jaw 15. By this means the rib 21 of the plate 19 is movable within the recess 17 for a distance corresponding to the length of the slot 22 and is held by the pin 23 from outward movement. The toothed plate 19 thus bears upon the oblique face of the jaw 15 and is movable thereon Within the range of the slot as shown. The pipe engaging teeth 20 of the plate 19 are arranged reversely to the teeth 18 and coact with the same to engage the pipe. 21 is provided with a recess to receive one terminal of a spring 2 1, the spring extending through the opening 18 and riveted or otherwise secured at its inner end to the extended rear portion of the jaw 15.
Pivotally connected at 2526 to the movable jaw are straps 27-28, while a strap spring 29 is connected at its ends to the straps 2728 and curved to bear against the adjacent edge of the stock 10 and thus eX- erts its force to maintain the teeth 16 of the stock 15 yieldably in engagement with the teeth 1a of the stock 10. By this simple means the movable jaw is held in engagement with the stock and can be readily moved along the stock by simply compressing the strap 27 to force the teeth 16 out of engagement with the teeth 14 and thus permit the jaw 15 to be adjusted longitudinally of the stock to adapt the teeth 13-20 to any required size of pipe or rod. As the force is applied to the handle portion 11 of the stock the member 19 will readily adjust itself to any inequalities or changes in size of the pipe.
Attention is called to the fact that when the wrench is operatively engaged with an object and the hand grip 11 is moved in the path of an arc toward the operator, the plate 19 will move inwardly upon the jaw 15 toward the stock 10 to engage at its inner extremity with the teeth 14 formed on said stock. By this arrangement, the said plate will coact with the teeth 16 of the said jaw to maintain the jaw stationary upon the stock and in engagement therewith when gripping the work. This is a decided fea- The rib P ture of advantage since the greaterthe sure which is brought to bear upon the hand grip 11 tending to move the work, the plate 19 will be moved inwardly upon thejaw with correspondingly increased force'to engage the teeth 14 of the stockto thus se curely hold the jaw 15 stationary upon the stock.- V
Having thus-described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A wrench including astock provided with a fixed jaw and having teeth formed thereon, a movable jaw slidably mounted upon the stock and provided with teeth adjacent the inner extremity thereof, a spring operatively connected to the movable jaw and adapted to normally hold the teeth thereof in engagement with the teeth of the stock, a grip member slidably mounted upon the'movable jaw, said'grip member having its working face inclined away from the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing Washington, D. G."
from the fixed jaw, the
with a fixed jaw and having teeth formed thereon, a movable jaw slidably mounted upon the stock and provided with teeth ad jacent the inner extremity thereof, said movable jaw being pivotally mounted adjacent its opposite extremity and operativelyconnected with-the stock, a spring operatively connected to the movable jaw and adapted to normally hold the teeth thereof in engage- M 2, A wrench including a stock provided ment' with the teeth of the stock, a grip,
the movable member slidably mounted upon grip member having its working aw, said face inclined away from the working face of '7 the fixed jaw and being movable toward said jaw to decrease the angle between the'ja'ws, and a spring carried by the movable jaw and adapted to normally hold said grip member at the limit of its outward movement away movable jaw being shiftable against the tension of said first mentioned spring. to disengage the teeth thereof from the teeth of the stock and simultaneously increase the angle between the jaws.
in presence of two witnesses.
