Be it known that I, MYER M. SHUs'rnR,
citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of 5 Pennsylvania, have invented anew and useful Wrench, of which thefollowing is a specification. I
My invention consists of a wrench, provided" with a movable jaw capable of slipping over and around the corners of the. nut and again be held in rigid engagement with a face of said nut, whereby the wrench may be shifted upon the nut without removing it from the latter and have the action, of a 5 ratchet wrench.
It further consists of such a wrench in:- which one jaw can be adjusted in its relation to the other jaw within predetermined liniits to admit of the wrench being employed upon nuts of various sizes. 7
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The annexed drawings and 25 description set forth in detail one mechanicalform embodying the invention, such (18" tail construction being but one of various the principle of mechanical forms in which the invention may be used.

In practice, the movable jaw is adjusted 5 by means of the worm to have both jaws span the nut, 34, and bear against opposite fiat faces of'the same, as appears in Fig. 1 ofthe drawings, and the grasp of the'hand 1 upon the handle will force the latch inward .to push the locking bolt to engage the body of theworm and keep the same from longitudinal movement. The wrench Will thus firmly clasp'the nut and 'can turn the same. When anew gripis to be made upon the nut, the wrench needs not be removed from the nut, but the latch is released to allow the locking-bolt to withdraw, when the turning of the wrench upon thenut to get a new grip will allow the movable jaw to slip over the corners of the nut, as illustrated in Fig.
3 of the drawings, as the jaw can slide and- Y move the worm against its spring until the jaws obtain. a new grip upon the nut, when.

handle and the latch. The action of the wrench will thus be substantially that of a ratchet wrench, andthe wrench needs not be removed from the nut each time a new grip is taken.. The wrench, thus combines the 80 functions of a monkey-wrench and a ratchetwrench.
In the form illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the adjustable jaw 7 is engaged by the worm 12, but-such worm has no 1on- 85 gitudinal movement, so that the adjustable jaw is stationaryin its adjusted positions. The opposite jaw, 34, has a reduced tongue, 35, which is pivoted 'in thehead of the wrench and .a flat spring, 36, 'is secured 49 upon the edge of the head and bears with its curved free portion against the curved outer edge of the jaw to normally hold the same parallel with the other jaw but allowing said'jaw to swing uponits pivot so as b to admit of the jaw slipping over the corners of the nut in the same-manner as the movable and adjustable jaw of the pre-. viously described form of wrench. Thesliding'bolt-2l is similar to that of said 60 other form and is similarly actuated by the latch 29, and the end of thebolt is forced over the tongue of the movably pivoted aw to hold the same when turning the nut.
The form illustrated in Fig. 6 hasthe movably 'pivoted jaw 34: and the same means for controlling it as the form lllustrated in Fig. 5, but the opposite jaw 3 is stationary, like that illustrated in Figs. 1,
' 2 and 3, so that the wrench 1s apphcable to one size of nuts,only, and not ad ustable as the other forms. When it is desired to holdthe movable jaw rigid without the necessity of manually holding the latch down, a pm canbe 66 inserted through -reg1stei1ng holes- 37, in

Other inodes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed for the mode herein explained. Change may therefore be made as regards the mechanism rinciples of following claims are employed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is :5
1. A wrench, comprising a handle having a head and an outwardly projecting stationary .jaw, a jaw transversely movable upon said head opposed to said stationary jaw, means for adjusting the moyable jaw in its relation to said stationary jaw, yielding means actingagainst said adjusting means to force the same and the movable jaw toward the stationary jaw, and a lock adapted to engage said jaw adjusting means and having means for normally maintaining it disengaged.
2. A wrench, comprising a handle having a head anda'stationary jaw upon said head, a movable and transversely adjustable jaw opposed to said stationary jaw and having a rack-bar slidably guided in in one" direction, a bolt longitudinally slidable in "the handle to engage and lock said worm with one end, and a latch in the handle'and adapted to slide such bolt.
. 3. A wrench, comprising a handle having a head formed with a stationary jaw and with an opening through said head having axially alined bores in its sides and with a transverse guide-perforation intersecting the outer side of said opening and the outer face of said head, a movable and adjustable jaw opposed. to said stationary jaw and having a bar slidable in the transverse guide'perforation and formed with a rack extending into the aperture of the head, a worm engaging said rack and having an axial pintle and an axial stem rotatable and slidable in the axially alined bores of the aperture, a spring within one of said bores and bearing against the stem of the worm, a locking bolt slidable in the handle and having one end projecting into the aperture of the. handle to engage the body of the worm, and means for sliding said bolt.
