Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 14, 1915.
Application flied March 11, 1915. serial No. 13,603.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that '1, HERMAN L. MELHEIM, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Hanska, in the county of Brown and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful lVrench; and li do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and-exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved wrench, and one of the objects of the invention is the provision of a wrench mechanism v which comprises a body having an elongated opening therein, which opening is enlarged at one end, and in which opening a movable wrench jaw is yieldably mounted, and which may be easily and quickly adjusted for turning different sized nuts.
In practical fields the ldetails of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
n the drawings z-Figure l is a view in perspective of the improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the double plunger rod movable wrench jaw. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 2 showing the sliding jaw which cooperates with the elongated slot of thevhandle of the body. Fig. 6 illustrates views of the sliding jaw of the elongated slot and the drag dog disassembled.
Referring more especially to the draw-` ings, 1 designates the body, which is constructed with an elongated reduced portion 2 having an elongated slot 3, one wall of which is constructed with teeth 4. At one end of the body member a stationary jaw 5 having teeth 6 is provided, and designed to coperate with the jaw 5 is a sliding movable jaw 7 U-shaped in cross section and provided with teeth 8. As is shown the jaw 7 arches the reduced or narrowed part of the body, and pivoted upon a pin 10 between the sides 11 of the U-shaped jaw is a drag dog 12 having teeth 13, which coperate with the teeth 4 of the slot 3, there being a leaf spring fixed at 14 in an elongated recess of said dog 12 so as to keep the teeth 13 in engagement with the teeth 4, thereby holding the jaw 7 in different adjusted positions. Secured at 16 and 17 to the edge 18 of the reduced part 2 are the springs 19 and 20, the free ends of which extend into the U-shaped'jaw, and act to hold said jaw when opened in an outwardly tilted position, and when the jaw is closed hold it closed with the edge 21 of said jaw against the `surface 22 of the body. The jaws 5 and 7 may be used for turning pipes and nuts, particularly pipes. When the jaw 7 is closed a suitable gripping handle is provided, whereby the other wrench mechanism may be employed. The other end of the body is constructed with an elongated opening 23 having a semicircular part 24, and in the face or wall 25 (which is opposite the semi-circular part 24) of the opening 23 is an elongated groove 26, which opens or extends entirely through the wall 25. Movable in the groove is a shank 28 of the triangular-shaped movable jaw 29, the angular portion of which is constructed with teeth 30, which coperate with the surfaces 31, 82 33, and 34, for particularly handling nuts and the like. However, the jaw 29 may be used for turning a pipe. An additional plunger 35 forms an integral part of the aw 29, and engages a bore 37 of the body there being a coil spring on said plunger to cooperate with the movable jaw 29 to hold it in contact with the nut or other object to be turned. The shank 28 is provided with a laterally extending thumb piece 40 extending through that portion of the groove 26, which opens through the wall 25 to the exterior of the body, and with which piece the thumb is designed to engage for adjusting the movable jaw 29.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A wrench comprising a body member having an elongated opening in one end, one wall of said opening being provided with a groove, which at one end opens through to the exterior of the body, a bore being formed in the body, a toothed movable jaw mounted in the opening having a shank to engage the groove and a plunger extending into the bore, a spring on the plunger between the jaw and one end of the opening, said shank having a thumb piece extending through the open end of the groove.
2. A wrench comprising a body having an opening at one end, said opening having a contracted portion, the body having a bore adjoining said contracted portion, one wall of the opening having a guide semi-circular in cross section, `a toothed triangular javv for increasing and decreasing the size of one end of the opening, said jaw having a semioircular rib fitting and guiding in said semiercular guide and provided with an exten sion alined with said rib, said extension having a thumb piece, said bod)7 upon one face thereof having a groove having one end adjoinin to and communicating with the eontraete 1 portion and through Which oommunieating part the extension protrudes, the; thumb piece being operable in said groove, said` extension, thumb pieceT and groove constituting means to additionally guide the jaw, a plunger' carried by the jaw and slidably mounted in the bore for further guiding the jaw, anda spring surrounding the plunger and interposed between one end of the contracted portion of said opening and the jaw.
In testimony whereof I have signed my nameto-this speciiioation in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
