PIPE-WRENCH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,872, dated June 23, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES F. GUTHRIE, J r., of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe- Wrenches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to pipe-wrenches or tongs and it consists in the combination of two jaws pivoted together and to a handle for operation, all substantially as hereinafter fully described, reference being had to the accompanying plate of drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are side views of a pipewrench constructed according to this invention, Fig. 1 representing the jaws as opened from each other, and Fig. 2 as closed upon each other; and Fig. 3is an edge view of Fig. 2.

In the drawings, A and B represent two jaws pivoted together at O, as usual in wrenches. The jaw A has an arm, D, extending beyond the pivot G, and is pivoted by said arm at E, to one end, F, of a bar or handle, G, and the jaw B has an arm, H, extending back in a bent form, as shown, and is connected to the bar or handleG by a pivot,'K, which pivot K is arranged to play in alongitudinal slot, L, in the bar G. The pivot K has a loose sleeve, M, within the slot L, which serves as a frictionroller to prevent friction in the movement of the pivot in the slot in the operation of the wrench. Taking hold of either one of the jaws A B, with the jaws closedas in Fig. 2, and swinging the handle in the direction shown by the arrow in such figure acts to open the jaws from each other, the pivot K in such opening moving along the slot L toward its end a, and swinging the handle in the reverse direction causes the jaws to approach to and close upon each other, the pivot K in such case moving toward the other end, I), of the slot L. Thuswith the jaws opened, as shown in Fig.- 1, if a pipe or other article is inserted between them, by pulling on the handle in the proper direction thejaws will be made to grasp and firmly hold the pipe, &c., and the tighter and firmer according as the power exerted on the handle is increased, and such hold is readily and quickly released by moving the handle in the opposite direction.

The arrangement and operation of the jaws is very convenient and practical in use, and especially in operating upon pipes located in the corner of a room or other place.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a wrench, two jaws, A B, pivoted to each other, the jaw A being pivoted to one end of a handle, and the jawB pivoted to the handle in anelongated slot, L, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In a wrench, two jaws, A B, pivoted to each other, the jaw A being pivoted to one end of a handle, and the jaw B pivoted to the handle in an elongated slot, L, its pivot K being provided with a loose sleeve, M, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
