BOX-TONGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2'7, 1912.
Application filed February 6, 1911. Serial No. 606,871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, RALPH L. LATrmor, a citizen of the United States, residing at Touchet, in the county of Walla Walla, State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box- Tongs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in box tongs.
The primary object of said invention is to provide a device of this character which will be simple in construction, efficient in practice and economical to manufacture.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device which may be manipulated by one hand of the operator, the construction being such. that the operator may grasp the device to be lifted and release the same with. the use of one hand.
WVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device arranged to grip a box. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one of the clutch members. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the adjustable supporting late. p In the drawings, 10 and 11 designate plates each of which are provided with elongated slots 12 which receive the adjusting set screws 12 the plate 10 being provided with a set screw adapted to enter the slots in the plate 11 and the plate 11 being provided with a set screw adapted to enter a slot in the plate 10. Pivotally secured at the end portion of each plate is a jaw member 14, said jaw member being provided with the offset 10 adapted to contact with the article to be lifted. The shank of said jaw member is ofiset, the same being spaced from the plates 10 and '11 and lying parallel with said plates, the shank of one aw member lying parallel with the shank of the other jaw member.
It will be noted that with the device in the position shown in Fig. 1 when the jaw members are lifted through the medium of the handles or shanks the end portions 14 will grip the box or other articles to be lifted. To release the article the shanks are pressed downwardly throwing said jaws out of contact with said article. Thus the griping and releasing of the article is accomplished with one hand of the operator.
The many advantages of a construction of this character will be clearly apparent as the same is one which may be manufactured economically the various parts being readily assembled. Particular attention is called to the peculiar construction and arrangement of the shanks by which the device is lifted, said shanks being so curved and so spaced from the sliding adjusting plate that the hands of the operator may be readily inserted. It will also be noted that the plates may be extended or drawn together to grasp the box by its sides.
I claim A device of the class described comprising a pair of opposed plates each formed with an elongated slot near its outer end, a set screw carried by the inner end. of each plate for engagement within the slot of the other plate, gripping jaws respectively disposed on opposite sides of the respective plates and pivoted to said plates between the slots and the outer ends thereof and depending from said plate, and handles extending from the jaws and disposed over the plates in spaced relation thereto and side by side in overlapping relation whereby both of said handles may be simultaneously gripped for operation of the jaws.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signa= ture, in presence of two witnesses.
