UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM VOGEL, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE AS- SIGNMENTS, TO WILLIAM FISCHER, SR., WILLIAM FISCHER, JR., FRANK FISCHER, AND AUGUST FISCHER, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,492, dated. August 21, 1900.
' Application filed May 21, 1900, Serial No.1'7,335. on model.)
To aZZ whom it may camera:
' Be it known that I, WILLIAM VOGEL, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at 243 Summer street, in the city of Paterson,
county of Passaic and State of New Jersey,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Asparagus, Bones, &c. 3 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple, durable, and inexpensive table implement for use, especially in handling asparagus, so as to render the eating of such vegetables as this as tidy as possible.
I have fully illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, wherein corresponding letters of reference indicate like parts, and wherein- I z 5 Figure l is a View in side elevation of one form of the device, showing a piece of asparagus or other article held thereby. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the holding or grasping end of said device, and Fig. 3 illustrates a 0 slightly-modified form of one of the coacting holders proper of the implement.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that I make use of the lazy-tong principle as a means for operating the members of the holder proper of the implement. To this end I employ two pairs of levers ct b and c d,
the members of each pair being pivotally connected approximately at their centers by rivets e, while the ends of the members 77 and 0 c and a and d are respectively pivotally con= nected also by rivets e. The free ends of the members a and b are provided with handles, preferably in the form of loops f. The members constituting the holder proper of the device are best shown in Figs. 2 and 3. g designates each of these members. It.is preferably stamped out in rectangular form from a piece of sheet metal, being afterward curved, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 3. When this rectangular plate is stamped out, two arms 71. and '5, integrally formed therewith, are also stamped out. One of these, h, projects from a central ribj, left in the plate when the superfluous metal both sides thereof has been removed, said arm being turned 0E at right angles to the rib, as shown in the drawings. The other arm 2' extends at right angles from one of the longitudinal or straight edges of the plate, being twisted, as at 7c, between its ends, its plane being thus parallel with that of the arm h.
Z designates links, which are pivotally connected also by rivets e to the free ends of the levers c and d. To the end of one of these links is pivotally connected by another rivet e the arm 72. of one of the members 9 of the holder, while to the corresponding end of the other link is likewise connected the arm h of the other member 9. The extremities i of both members g are disposed between the two levers c and d, being fulcrumed upon the rivet e, which connects them.
If desired, one or both of the members of the holder may be provided with projections in the form of spurs q, the same being disposed on their inner surfaces, so as to engage the article grasped by the implement.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a table implement, the combination of a pair of lazy-tongs having handles at one end,
a pair of coactin g curved plates having arms, one arm of each plate being pivotally connected to said lazy-tongs at the fulcrumingpoint of the adjacent levers thereof, and links, said links being pivotally connected to the other arms of the plates and the extremities of said levers, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I go have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of May, 1900.
WILLIAM VOGEL. Witnesses:
ALFRED GARTNER, MARGARET BRITTON.
