SPECIFICATION formingrpart Of Letters Patent NO. 758,491, dated April 26, 1904. Application filed June l, 1903. Serial No. 159,490. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be'it known that I, ROBERT WooDMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Embossing Punches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved punch for embossing letters and designs upon paper, the object of the invention being to provide a convenient and durable punch so constructed that the embossing-dies may be quickly and easily attached thereto or detached therefrom, and thus render it possible for any number of different sets of dies to be used with one punch.
The invention consists in a male and female die joined together by a flat bifurcated spring and constructed to be detachably attached to a pair of jaws in an embossing-punch.
The invention again consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring'to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved embossingpunch. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 isa perspective view of the embossing-dies and the spring by which they are joined together. Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 10 is an embossing- punch comprising jaws 11 and 12, pivoted one to the other at 13. The jaw 11 has a handle 14 integral therewith, said jaws 11 and 12 being held apart by a spiral spring 15. The jaw 12 is tipped upon the pivot 13 by a handle 16, pivoted at 17 to the jaw'11. The handle 16 and jaw 12 constitute together a compound lever, which renders the operation of the punch very easy, the amount of pressure applied to the handles being largely multiplied by said compound leverage.
Between the ends of the jaws 11 and 12 is inserted a pair of dies consisting of a male die 18 and female die 192 Said dies are fastened together by a fiat spring 20.V The free ends 21 22 of the flat spring 2O are fastened, respectively, to the male and female dies 18 and 19. Said spring is V-shaped in side elevation, as seen in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, and in plan view is bifurcated, the bifurcated portions 23 23 of said spring extending longitudinally of the punch and upon opposite sides, respectively, of the jaws 11 and 12.
The heads of rivets 24 24, by which the free end 22 of the spring 20 is fastened to the die 19, project upwardly into recesses 25 25, provided in the jaw 12, and serve as a means for locking the dies 18 and 19 together with the iiat spring 20 in fixed relation to the jaws 11 and 12. It will be seen-and understood that the dies18 and 19 are readily removed by drawing them out from between the jaws 11 and 12 longitudinally of the punch or toward the left, Figs. 1 and 2, the spring 20 yielding to allow the projections 24 24 to pass out of the recesses 25 25. The bifurcated portions 23 23 of the spring 20, lying adjacent to the opposite faces of the jaws 11 and 12, assist in holding the dies 18 and 19 in position and also in guiding them into place when said dies are pushed in between said jaws.
In operating my improved punch the dies 18 and 19 are first placed between the jaws 11 and 12 by pushing said dies toward the right, Fig. 1, until the projections 24 24 enter the recesses 25. The paper is placed between the faces of the dies 18 and 19, and the handles 14 and 16 are then pressed toward each other, causing the jaws 11 and 12 to approach each other and the dies 18 and 19 to be forced against opposite sides, respectively, of the paper which it is desired to emboss.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire by Letters Patent to secure, is-
1. An embossing-punch comprising in its construction a pair of jaws pivoted one to the other, a male and a female die, a fiat bifurcated spring fast at its free ends to said male and female dies, respectively, and means to detachably attach said dies to said jaws.
2.
