Description
No. 818,465. PATENTED APR. 24, 1906- L. W. PRICE.
FORGEPS FOR HANDLING BOILED CLOTHES.
APPLICATION FILED APR.17, 1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 24, 1906.
Application filed April 17, 1905. Serial No. 256,078.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, Lor W. PRIoE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whitten, in the county of Hardin and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Forceps for Handling Boiling Clothes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to forceps for handling boiling clothes, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which will be extremely simple in construction and which will firmly and positively grip the clothes for changing their position in the boiler without tearing or otherwise injuring the same.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.
While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with parts broken away and showing the device as open in full lines and as closed in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a plan view.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The numerals 1 and 2 designate the two handles, levers, or bars, which are pivoted at an intermediate point 3 and provided at opposite ends with spoon-shaped members 4. These spoon-shaped members 4 have the lever attached thereto slightly at one side and are bent at a slight angle to said lever, so that the opposite ends will close squarely upon each other. These spoon-sha ed members at the clothes-gripping end are ollowed out to form a recess and are provided with two slots 5 at the back thereof, which serve the double function of reducing the weight and also of enabling a better grip to be obtained upon the clothes. The spoon-shaped members which form the handles are also hollowed out to form a recess which serves as a housing for a spring 6, as seen in the drawings. The ends of the spring 6 are bent so as to pass through openings 7. However, it will be obvious that any desired form of spring may be used and that it may be fastened in the recess in any suitable manner. The handles thus formed serve the double purpose of enabling the operator to get a strong grip upon them and of forming a housing for the spring.
From the foregoinlg1 description it will be readily understood t at I have produced a device which has obvious advantages over those now in use, due chiefly to its great simplicity and effectiveness in operation. In practice it is intended to manufacture these forceps out of aluminium; but any other suitable material may be used.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
A forceps for handling boiling clothes comprising levers pivoted at an intermediate point and provided at their opposite ends with spoon-shaped members, each pair of which open toward and are adapted to close upon each other, one pair of the spoon-shaped members serving as jaws with which to grip the clothes and having longitudinal slots in the back thereof, and a spring fitting the recess formed by the opposite pair of spoonshaped members which owing to their peculiar shape enable the operator to obtain a good purchase thereon.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
