Description

. c. DELBRIDGEL v BRANDING IRON.
APPLICATION .FILED DEC. 26. 1916.
Patented Oct. 23, I917.
oLAUnn BnnivAannnnBnIDeE, eaapfpeteam;{among naannme ijaon.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it lmown that I, CLAUDE BERNARD Dnnnninon, a citiien of the'United States, residing at Roosevelt, in the county of Gila and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Branding- Irons; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled" in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in branding irons, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a new and improved type of branding iron that may be used to brand any letter or design, etc., desired.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very eflicient in operation.
With these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be herein referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is an end elevation of the branding iron;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4: shows one type of handle applied to the iron; and
Fig. 5 shows a slightly different form of handle to hold the iron in operative position.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views. My new improved branding iron is formed in two parts, connected by rods which coact with a handle used during the operation of the device.
The iron consists of a curved edge 1 formed of a metal strip curved semi-circular, and a straight edge 2 formed of a straight metal strip spaced from the first mentioned strip, and connected therewith by a pair of connecting rods 3. These connecting rods 3 have their upper ends 4 flattened and secured at the ends of the curved edge 1 by means of rivets 5- 'lhe lower ends of the Specification of Letters p tent P -te t O t, 23, 1917 Ap lication filed December 26,1916ed5e'ria11io. 138366. i H
connecting rods are also flattened as shown I at G-and connected'to the straight edge .2 adacent the ;opposite ends, of the same by.
;e0 These; two .edges and, theiruconnecting..
means .of rivets 7 means form-the iron proper, -;but in operation, it is necessary to provide the iron with some type ofxhandl'e and for. vthis. purpose either-of the two types illustrated in the accompanying drawings are applicable. In
Fig. 4, I have shown the use of a pair of.
green sticks S, which are adapted to have their ends placed across each other between the two rods 3, and then bent oppositely around one of the rods and diverging therefrom, thereby forming a suitable holder which will rigidly support the iron during its operation.
In Fig. 5 of the drawings, I have shown a slightly different type of holder, which comprises a pair of pivoted jaws J with hooked ends adapted to engage the rods to securely hold them in position. In this type of holder, it is necessary to spread the jaws apart to securely grip the two rods that connect the edges of the iron.
In operation, the iron proper is first thoroughly heated, and then by the employment of either type of handle S or J, the iron is rigidly held, whereby it may be aplied to the animal, or whatever is desired to be branded, in a manner which is obvious.
Owing to the fact that the iron is formed with a curved edge and a straight edge, this iron may be used to create any desired letter or symbol that is designated. Heretofore, when branding cattle, either a straight headed rod was used or a branding iron applicable only for one type of symbol, but by the use of my new and improved iron, these cumbersome devices are done away with, and one iron may be used to form any desired letter or symbol. Furthermore, owing to the construction of the iron, and the coaction of the connecting rods with the handle, the device may be very efficiently operated in a short time.
From the foregoing description of the construction and operation of my new and improved branding iron, the manner of applying the same to use and the operation thereof will be readily understood and it will be seen that I have provided a simple and eflicient means for carrying out the objects of the invention,
I claim 1. A branding iron of the class described comprising a curved branding edge, a straight separate branding edge spaced from the curved edge, rods connecting said edges, and a handle coacting with said rods to detachably engage the iron to operate the same, said straight and curved branding edges lying in substantially parallel planes.
' 2. A branding iron of the class described comprising a strip curved semi-circular to form one edge of said iron, a straight strip spaced from the first mentioned strip to form the other edge of the iron, a pair of naaaneo rods connected at one end to the ends of the curved strip and at the other to the straight strip, and a handle coacting With said rods to detachably engage the iron to operate the same, said straight and curved branding edges lying in substantially parallel planes. I
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of tWo subscribing W1tnesses..
