Description

N. A. HERRINGSTAD.

AUXILIARY LIFTING HANDLE FOR SHOVELS. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 26,1913.

1 1 5 l ,0 l 2. Patented Aug. 24, 1915.

FFIQE.

'NELS A. HERRINGSTAD, OF ALBERT LEA, MINNESOTA.

AUXILIARY LIFTING HANDLE FOR SHOVELS.

Application filed June 26, 1913.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NnLs A. HERRING- STAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albert Lea, in the county of Freeborn and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auxiliary Lifting-Handles for Shovels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has for its object to provide an improved auxiliary lifting handle for shovels and, to this end, it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of a shovel having applied thereto my invention, some parts being broken away and some of the exposed parts being shown in section; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section, taken on the line 00 m of Fig. 1.

The numeral 1 indicates the shovel having a handlebar 2 which terminates in a hand piece 8. The auxiliary lifting handle 4 is provided with a short handle bar 5 pivotally secured to a clamp 6. Ihis clamp 6 comprises a pair of metallic straps bent to embrace the handle bar 2 and terminating in reversely projecting parallel lugs 8 and 9. Nut equipped draw bolts 10 are passed through the lugs 8' and 9, for frictionally clamping the straps of the clamp 6 onto the handle bar 2 in different longitudinal and circumferential adjustments.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Au 24, 1915.

Serial No. 775,907.

The lugs 8 are laterally spaced apart, to receive the free end portion of the handle bar 5, which is pivotally secured thereto by a nut equipped bolt 11. The metallic straps of the clamp 6 are provided with inwardly alined offset lugs 12, affording a stop with which a finger 18, formed on the handle bar 5, is engageable, to limit the forward swinging movement of the auxiliary lifting handle 4:.

The term shovel is herein used in a liberal sense, to include as its equivalent a spade or fork. The clamp 6 permits the auxiliary lifting handle 4 to be set in various adjustments, as desired.

The above described device, while extremely simple and of comparatively small cost to manufacture, is thought to be highly eflicient for the purpose had in view.

What I claim is:

The combination with a shovel, of a clamp comprising a pair of duplicate metallic straps having integral inwardly alined ofiset lugs affording a stop, draw bolts for frictionally clamping said straps onto the handle bar of said shovel, an auxiliary lifting handle pivotally secured between said straps outward of said stop and having an extension engageable with said stop, to limit the forward swinging movement of said auxiliary handle.

In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.

NELS A. HERRINGSTAD.

Witnesses:
