A. J. HOLMES.
CULINARY TONGS.
No. 345,846. Patented July 20, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALONZO J. HOLMES, OF SARATOGA SPRINGS, NEW YORK.
CULINARY TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 345,846, dated July 20, 1886.
Application filed May 1, 1856. Serial No. 200,838. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALoNZo J. HoLMEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sara toga Springs, in the county of Saratoga and State ofNew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Culinary Tongs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Like letters refer to similar parts through out the several views.
My invention relates to improvements 'in culinary tongs, designed more especially for removing such articles as eggs, vegetables, 850., from hot water; and it has for its object to simplify and cheapen the construction, and to otherwise improve this class of devices.
To these ends, and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the peculiar combinations and the novel construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is aperspective of the preferred form of my improvements. Fig. 2 isa similar view of a modified form. Fig. 3 is a similar view of a second modification. Fig. 4 is still another modification.
Referring by letter to the drawings, in which I have shown the preferred forms, but to which I do not intend to restrict myself, as it is evident that the same may be varied to a considerable extent Without departing from the spirit of my invention, A in Fig. 1 represents the jaws, formed of suitable wire, the wire composing one of thejaws being bent, so as to form the handle B and cross-bar O, the ends of the wire composing the other jaw being formed with eyes a, engaging said crossbar. Each of the wires composing the jaws A is formed with eyes I), diametrically opposite to each other, and in these eyes are se cured the loops 0; or these eyes may be omitted, and the ends of the wires forming these loops may be firmly wound around or otherwise secured to the sides of the jaws A, as shown in dotted lines.
The construction shown in Fig. 2 is similar 5 to that above described, except that the handle B is formed independent of the wire composing the jaws, the ends of which are formed with eyes embracing the cross bar 0 of the handle, which is thus free to be swung around,
ing the crossbar of the handle, which is also 7c pivoted.
In use the hand engages the handle, and fingers are passed through the loops 0 of the jaws A, and in this manner the jaws may be readily opened and closed at will. ing ends of the jaws may be of any desired configuration.
I am aware that tools intended for use in removing articles from hot water have been constructed, in which one of the jaws has been provided with a ring for the reception of the finger, such a device being shown it Patent No. 30,437, and also in Patent No. 26,393, and I make no claim to such construction.
Having thus described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim to be new,
and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, wit-l1 an elongated loop for the reception of the hand, of two jaws, each pivotedly connected to said loop, and each 0 provided with a ring or loop for the reception of a finger, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALONZO J. HOLMES.
