Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 340', 1916.
Application filed April 25, 1913. Serial N 0. 763,643.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MICHAEL O. KELLER, a citizen of United States, residing at Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidor-Lifters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in cuspidor lifters, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which is formed from a resilient length of metal, and so constructed that it can be conveniently engaged with a cuspidor so that the same. can be carried from place to place without the necessity of the hands coming in contact therewith.
With these and other objects in View, this invention residdi; in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device partly in section showing the same engaged with a cuspidor. Fig. 3 is a slightly modified form of the invention showing the jaws constructed to grasp a pan or the like. Fig. 4c is a fragmentary front elevation of the modified form showing it engaging a pan.
Referring particularly to Figs. 1 'and 2 there is shown a pair of jaws 1, each of which consists of upper and lower horizontally spaced bars 2 and 3, respectively, the forward ends of which are connected by vertical bars 4, the same being curved outwardly for a portion of their length, as indicated at 5 so as to more effectually grip the cuspidor 6. The inner ends of the bars terminate in vertical bars 7 which are also curved as at 8 and are engaged at the upper ends by eyes 9 formed upon the inner ends of the bars 2. The bars 7 terminate attheir upper ends in curved portions 10, which in turn terminate in arms 11 which are arranged cross-wise at their upper ends and form a coil 12, thereby providing a handle 13, the arms 11 of which are provided with depressions 1 1 at their junction with the portions 10. Slidably mounted on the hanof the preferred form, while the jaws 18 thereof consist of horizontal bars 19, vertical end bars 20 and 21, respectively. The bars 20 terminate in inwardly directed portions 22 which are provided with eyes 28, said eyes engaging the lower ends of'the arms 24: of the handle 17, said arms being continuations of the forwardly directed portions 25, which have their outer ends formed integral with the upper ends of the bars 21. A ring 26 is slidably engaged upon the handle 17 and operates in the same manner as the ring 15 of the preferred form. Thus it will be seen that the jaws 18 are arranged so that the'handle 17 is positioned at an in clination thereto, whereby when the handle 17 is grasped by the hand, the hand will be so positioned as to position the same in such respect to the stove that the heat therefrom will not come in contact with the hand when the device is being used for lifting hot pans or the like from stoves.
What is claimed is A cuspidor lifter comprising a single length of Wire formed at its central portion with a plurality of resilient coils, the end portions of the wire being then crossed and bent to extend in substantially parallel relation, and terminally bent to form rectan gular portions, adapted for engaging the sides of said cuspidor, supports arranged on said rectangular portions and engaging the base of the cuspidor, a keeper slidably mounted on one of said end portions and said end portions being bowed adjacent their free extremities to receive said keeper.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
MICHAEL O. KELLER.
