Description

(N0 Model.)
J. W. SMITH. STOVE LID LIFTER.
No. 554,150. Patentd Feb. 4, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. SMITH, OF MOGADORE, OHIO.
STOVE-LID LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,150, dated February 4, 1896.. Application filed July 25,1895. Serial No. 5 57,1 13. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES WV. SMITH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mogadore, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Lid Lifters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I
The object of this invention is to provide a stove-lid lifter of such construction that the lower part will overbalance the handle so as to keep the handle away from the top of the stove, the lifter being provided with a fulcrum which is utilized in lifting the lid from the stove, and is so constructed that it also forms a hook which may be effectively used as a pot-hook.
With the above ends in view my invention consists in making a lid-lifter so that the preponderance of weight is at the lower end of the same, and beyond the lower end a fulcrum, so that the lifter when resting upon the stove will hold the handle a considerable dis tance from the same, the peculiar construction of the fulcrum permitting the lifter to be effectively used as a pot-hook.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side view of a stove-lid lifter constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a View showing the device applied as a lid-lifter, and Fig. 3 a view showing its application as a pot-hook.
A designates the lid-lifter, which is so constructed as to provide a light looped handle A, an enlarged end A having a hook a, and at an intermediate point a fulcrum A consisting of two memberswhich are flared or curved outwardly and extend rearwardly.
WVhen a lid-lifter constructed as shown and described is placed upon the top of a stove or support the handle will incline upwardly,
the device resting upon the prongs or fu1- crum A and its lower curved end a, as the preponderance of weight at the lower end holds the device in this position. It will also be noted that as the fulcrum or prongs extend from the body portion of the implement, as shown and described, theyprovide a hook which can engage the handle of a pot or kettle for lifting the same from the stove.
When used as a pot-hook the lower end of the implement can engage the outer edge of the pot, so that the pot can be tilted.
The primary object of having the fulcrum extend beyond each side of the handle is to provide a wide support when the device is used as a lid-lifter.
The device is preferably made of a single piece or cast, and can therefore be cheaply manufactured.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A stove-lid lifter and pot-hook comprising a hooked portion, handle and fulcrum formed integral with each other, the fulcrum comprising members which extend outwardly and rearwardly, for the purpose set forth. 2. A stove-lid lifter and pot-hook made of a single piece and comprising the handle portion A, lifting end a, and intermediate fulcrum A presenting a pair of rigid diverging members each being curved outwardly and rearwardly; the lifting end a of the article containing a preponderance of material whereby the handle is overbalanced, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES W. SMITH.
