BARREL CARRIER.
No. 375,785. 2 Patented Jan. 3, 1888..
WM/Masses I Show wow:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEONIDAS ELVVEBB AND THEODORE JOHNSON, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
BARREL-CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,785, dated January 3, 1888.
. Application filed Se; tember 26, 1887. Serial No. 250,667. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, LEONIDAS E. WEBB and THEODORE JoHNsoN, citizens of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Barrel-Car riers, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in barrel-carriers of that class in which the barrel is seized and lifted while standing on end.
The object of our improvement is to provide means for adjusting the carrier to embrace closely barrels of different diameters, and means for folding the carrier into a small compass when not in use.
The accompanying drawings illustrate our.
invention.
Figure 1 is a plan. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective. Fig. 3 is a plan showing the carrier folded up.
A and B are a pair of wooden bars, each having turned handles 1) Z) formed on their opposite ends, and a central curved recess, 0, which is adapted to fit the periphery of an ordinary barrel. Recess c is preferably formed by bending the bar, as shown; but it may be formed by cutting away a portion of the inner edge of the bar. Bars A and Bare connected on one side of the center by a curved link, 0, which is pivoted at the ends to the bars by bolts or rivets e e. Said link is preferably formed of two strips of light baud-iron, arranged, as shown, on opposite sides of the bars; but it may be formed of a single piece. Bars A and B are detachably connected on the other side of the center by a latch-bar, D. Said latch-bar is curved oppositely to the link (3, and is pivoted at one end to the bar B by a bolt, f. It consists of a thin flexible strip of metal arranged with its flat sides in a vertical plane, so that it is adapted to yield to the contour of the sides ofa barrel. The other or free end of the latch-bar is detachably secured to bar A by means of a pin, 19, projecting from the bar, and one of a series of notches, a, formed in the outer edge of the latch-bar.
S S are sharp spurs projecting from the bars and adapted to enter the material of the barrel.
In operation, the latch-bar D being disconv nected at its free end, bars A' and B are passed on either side of the barrel to be lifted until link 0 comes in contact with the barrel, thus spreading the bars at one end, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 1. The periphery of the barrel is now firmly gripped between the bars A and B by drawing their free ends together, and they are locked in this position by the operator drawing latch-bar D closely around the barrel and engaging one of the notches a with pin 1), the recoil of the latchbar serving to keep the notch in close engagement with the pin. Bars A and B now serve as handles, by means of which the barrel may be lifted and carried.
WVhen not in use, the whole device may be folded within a small compass, as shown in Fig. 3.
\Ve claim as our invention- 1. In a barrel-carrier, the combination, with the pair of parallel bars forming handles, and the link connecting said bars, of the latch-bur consisting of a thin flexible strip of metal pivoted at one end to one of said bars, detachably secured at its free end to the other bar, and adapted to embrace the contour of a barrel with a'yielding pressure, subsl antially as specified.
2. In a barrel-carrier, the combination of the bars A and B, the curved link O. consisting of two metallic strips pivoted at both ends to opposite sides of said bars, the flexible latch-bar D, pivoted at one end to one of the bars and having notches n at the opposite end, and the pin p, all arranged to cooperate in the manner and for the purpose specified.
