IMPROVEMENT lN LlFTINC-HANDLES FOR CHESTS OR BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,881, dated March 4, 1879; application filed December 2, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILHELM BACHTEN- KIRGH, of Iserlohn, Westphalia, Prussia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lifting-Handles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, iii-- Figure 1, a front view; Fig. 2, a side view.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of lifting-handles designed for chests, boxes, 850.; and consists in the construction hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings.
a. is the base or plate, made from sheet or other suitable metal, pierced orprovided with means for attachment to the box or whatever it may be.
Longitudinally across the plate, on the back side, is a groove, made by bending the plate, as at I). This groove is of U shape, and produces a corresponding rise upon the outside, and across this groove or rib 1) two cuts, 0, are made.
The handle 61 is made of wire or other suit able material, and of any desirable bend 01' form.
The two ends are brought into line with each other, so as to lie in the groove in the plate, the extreme ends being turned outward into the cuts or openings 0, so that when the plate is attached to the boX it holds the bandle in the groove; and the ends of the handle, when turned upward, as in Fi g. 2, bear against the front of the plate, as a support against which to lift.
I do not claim a lifting-handle constructed so that the bar or .plate serves as the means of holding the handle in place when attached to the trunk, as this I know to be old; but
I do claim- The herein-described improvement in liftin g-handles, consisting ofthebase or plate constructed with a longitudinal groove in its back, combined with a handle supported in said groove, its ends turned outward through openin gs in said groove, substantially as described.
