NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARVIN K. RANDALL, or srEDMAN, NEW YORK.
DEVICE FOR HOLDING MILK-PAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o.. 354,438, dated December 14, 1886 Application tiled February 1, 1886. Serial No. 190,489. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARVIN K. RANDALL, of Stedman, in the county of Ghautauqua,in the State of New York, have invented a new vand useful Improvement in Devices for Holding Milk-Fails; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to animprovement in devices for holding milk-pails, and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a pail-holder embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a top plan view ofthe same.
A represents a circular hoop, which comprises two sections, B and C, which are united together by the hinge D. To the free end of the section B of the hoop is attached a curved plate, E, by means of screws F. Thesaid plate forms an extension of the section B, andis provided with a longitudinal slot, G. At the outer end of the plate E is a recess, H. The outer end of the plate E bears against the outer side of the free e'nd of the section C, and from the free end of the said section projects a threaded stud, I, which passes through the slot G, and on the said stud is screwed a thumb-nut, K, the function of which is to clamp the plate E to the section C. The latter is also provided with a stop, L, having a head, and adapted to enter the recess II of the plate when the section C of the hoop is closed against the section B. The function of the said headed stop is to secure the free end of the plate G and cause it to bear against the section C.
M represents supporti iig-legs, three in number, which are secured to the hoop A.
The operation of Iny invention is as follows: My invention is designed to hold a pail during the operation of milking, and the pail has its lower end inserted in the hoop and snpported thereby, as will be very readily understood. By making the hoop in two hinged sections it will be readily seen that the hoop may be partly opened, so as to accommodate pails of varying sizes, and by means of the slotted plate and the. thumb-nut the sections ofthe hoop may be clasped firmly around the pail.
I am aware that it is old to provide a barrel-dumper with a sectional band for clasping the barrel, and curved metallic legs secured to a base-piece at their lower ends, and having pivots at their upper ends to receive the band. I am also aware that it is old to provide a milking-stool with a band to clasp a milk-pail; but neither of these devices comprises my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- In a device for holding milk-pails, the hoop A, comprising the semicircular sections B C, hinged together, and legs secured to and de pending from t-he sect-ions, in combination with the plate E, attached to the free end of one section and having the slot G, the stud I, projecting from the other section and extending through the slot G, the thumb-nut K, screwed upon the said stud, and the headed stop L, as set forth.
Dated November 27, 1885.
MARVIN K. RANDALL.
