Description

(No Model.)
B. O. MUNGER.
FRUIT UAN.
Patented June 17 IN VE N TOR A TTORNEYS WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
REUBEN O. MUN GER, OF CHEBANSE, ILLINOIS.
FRUIT-CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Ala 430,349, dated June 1'7, 1890. Application filed February 28, 1890- $erial No. 342,080. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, REUBEN C. MUNGER, of Chebanse, in the county of Iroquois and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Fruit-Can, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved fruit-can, showing the application of my invention to a glass jar. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is an inverted plan View of the cover. Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section of a metallic fruit-can, and Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail View of the fastening-link.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of my invention is to provide a fruit can or jar in which the mouth of the can or jar is of the same diameter as the body thereof, and in which the cover may be perfectly sealed and firmly held in place.
My invention consists in the combination, with the fruit-can or with a can adapted to contain a fruit-jar, of a pivoted lever having a beveled end, a link for engaging the beveled end of the lever, and a screw for engaging the link and drawing it forward upon the beveled end.
The invention also consists in the construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter described and claimed.
To the can A are attached the wire loops a b, which are oifset at their free ends, as shown. The loop 12 projects above the top of the can A and receives the lever B. The lever B is of sufiicient length to extend across the can and project over and beyond the loop a. The free end of the lever B is beveled and the pivoted end of the said lever is furnished with an ear 0, through which passes the threaded rod D. The rod D is provided with an eye 0, by which it may be turned. The threaded end of the rod D projects through the link E, the said link being pivoted in the loop a. The link E receives the beveled end of the lever B, and is adapted to be drawn forward by the rod D. A cover F, of glass or other suitable material, is fitted to the top of the can A,
and is provided with an annular grooved for receiving the packin e, which bears upon the upper edge of the can. The top of the cover is provided with radial ribs f, joined to a central boss g, the said-boss being grooved transversely to form a seat for the lever B.
The fruit or other material to be preserved is placed in the can, and the can is closed by the cover F, when the link is swung over the beveled end of the lever B, and the threaded rod D is inserted in the threaded aperture of the link and turned unt sufficient pressure is produced upon the cov er of the can to form a perfect seal.
Then my inventiol used in connection with glass jars, the o u; made of sufficient diameter to receive the jar G, and the cover F is fitted to the top of the jar and adapted to pass within the I'll'Il of the can A. The operation of scaling in this case is the same as that already described; but instead of producing pressure upon the upper edge of the can A it is exerted upon the rim of the jar G. In this case the can A is provided with aperture h, through which the contents of the jar may be viewed.
My invention applies to cans and jars of all sizes, and may be used in connection with casks, kegs, and tubs.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a fruit-can, the combination of the can A, provided with the offset loop a, secured to one side thereof near the top, and the offset loop b, secured to the opposite side of the can and projecting above the top thereof, the lever B, pivoted on the loop I) and having a beveled end, the link E, pivoted on the loop a, and the screw threaded rod D passing through the angled end of the lever B and into a threaded aperture of the link, substantially as specified.
2. The gombination of the can A, the jar G, fitting into the can, the cover F, provided with an annular groove for receiving the edge of the can, the lever B, pivoted on the loop b and having a beveled end, the link E, provided with a screw-th readed aperture, and the screwthreaded rod D, passing through the angled the beveled end of the lever, and the screwend of the lever B and entering the end of threaded rod D, extending, throughthe angled 10 the loop E, substantially as specified. l end of the lever B and into a threaded aper- 3.
