Be it known that I, LANnoN L. DOWNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented new and useful Improvements in Valise Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is intended to supply means for carrying canes, umbrellas, and other articles of similar shape on a valise or suit-case. The device is very easily and quickly attached to or detached from the valise, and when on the valise but not in use the holder can be turned up from its projecting and opera tive position. It is easily constructed, of very moderate cost, and quite durable.

The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention, its various figures being referred to by letters, similar letters denoting corresponding parts in the several views.

Figure 1 in the drawings is a plan or face view of the device with its hook in operative position. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the hook turned up out of the way. Fig. 3 is a reduced back view of a valise with my attachment tliereon and holding an umbrella. Fig. 4 is an edge view showing the device attached to a valise, the latter appearing frag mentarily and in section. Fig. 5 is a side view of the wedge or plug enlarged.

The letter a designates the body of the device. It is shaped in general like the capital letter Y and is preferably made of flat metal about one-half inch wide. The upper ends of this body are bent over backward to form three sides of a quadrangle I) and have terminally a short inward bend c to engage the binding wedge or plug d. Near the lower end of the body are two wings projecting forward from its sides and which serve as guides e to the shank of the umbrella-holder. The plug (Z is preferably made of wood and may or may not be secured to the body by a cord or chain j: Then the attachment is placed in position on the valise 12, these plugs are pushed in between the inner side of the valise and the opposite face of the quadrangle b. This makes a secure fastening without marring the valise. g is the shank, and h the terminal hook, of the holder. These are preferably made in one piece of stout wire, the lower part being curved into the form of a hook and the shank g bent to form a narrow loop. This shank is adapted to be moved vertically on the body a between the guides e e or to be adjusted horizontally, as shown in Fig. 2. This shank is held adj ustably and removably on the body a by a nut i, which is screwed upona threaded stem fixed near the lower end of the body and projecting out be tween the two sides of the looped shank. .the shank is made from a solid piece, then a slot is out for the passage of the stem Having described the invention, what I claim is 1. A valise attachment comprising a body, its upper part being adapted to engage the edge of the valise, a holder having a shank adjustable on said body, and a terminal hook as described.

2. A valise attachment having the upper part of its body bent to engage the valise, means to bind said upper part to the valise, guides at the lower part of said body, a holder having a shank movable on said body be tween said guides, and adjustable crosswise, means to bind said hook to saidbody, and a terminal hook for the purpose herein set forth.

3. A valise attachment comprising a body whose upper ends are bent into a quadrangle to engage the edge of the valise, a plug to bind said body to said valise, guides and a threaded stem near the lower end of said body, a shank movable between said guides, a hook on said shank, and a nut to engage said threaded stem as it projects through said shank.
