Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed September 5, 1911.
Patented Got. 15, 1912. serial No. 647,544.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, OLAF M. BEKKEVAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Townsend, in the county of Jefferson and State of Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Umbrella-Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in umbrella carriers and has for its principal object to provide a device for carrying an umbrella on a person so that the person may have both hands free.
Another object is to provide a means whereby the umbrella may be closed and in closed position swung around and remain in the carrier.
These and other objects may be apparent from the following description and with particular reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the harness and carrier showing the umbrella in raised position. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same showing the umbrella closed, in inverted position. Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing the umbrella closed.
.Referring to the drawings, 10 and 11 represent a pair 0f shoulder straps which are crossed at l2 and adapted to be placed on the back of the wearer, the upper ends thereof passing through elongated slots 13 in a plate of supple material 14 and the lower ends passing through a similar but smaller plate 15. The lower end portions of the straps below the plate 15 extend around the waist of the wearer, and are adapted to be secured thereto by means of the buckle 16, while the opposite 'end portions of the straps are secured to the rst named end portions at 17 which will lie in front of the wearer when folded. Swiveled in the plate 14 is an eye member 18, through which the rod 19 of the umbrella is passed, and mounted on the lower plate 15 is a socket member 20.
As shown in Fig. 1 the umbrella is raised, and the handle of the umbrella 21 is seated Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the within the socket 20, said umbrella being in such position that it is over the wea-rers head. When the umbrella is not desired in such posit-ion, the same is drawn up to withdraw the handle 21 from the socket and the umbrella closed, when the umbrella is rotated with the eye member 18 and the tip 22 engaged in the socket 20, thus providing the means for carrying the umbrella in both open and closed positions. The umbrella can be easily manipulated from closed position by lifting the tip from the socket swing the umbrella to one side and drawing the same above the wearers head and opening the umbrella, when the umbrella may be slipped down until the handle is in the socket 20.
To hold the umbrella from slipping out of the socket l provide a set screw 23 in the socket which is adapted to be engaged against either the handle 21 or the tip 22 thus securely clamping either end of the umbrella within the socket.
What is claimed is:
An umbrella carrier comprising a body harness including a back engaging plate and a waist engaging plate, a swiveled eye member on the back engaging plate, said eye member receiving the handle end of the rod of the umbrella, a socket member on the waist engaging plate, said socket member having an openino in the bottom thereof, a spring clip in the eye member for retaining the umbrella stick centrally therein, and clamping means in the socket, whereby the umbrella is adapted to have its handle engaged in the socket and opened over the wearers head, and when closed to be ro` tated with the eye member and having its opposite end passed through the opening in the bottom of said socket, and held by said clamping means.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
OLAF M. BEKKEVAR.
