UNITED STATES PATENT @Erica ELIZABETH G. TEBISUTT, OF ALBANY, NEV YORK.
PAD-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 597,034, dated January 1 1, 1898 Application inea January 5, 1897. salam. 618,011. un moan.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known thatI, ELIZABETH G. TEBsU'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, rhave invented a new and useful Sales-Book Pocket, of which the following is a speoiiication.
My invention relates to a sales-book pocket; and it consists in an article comprising the devices and elements hereinafter described and combined as set forth; and the objects of my invention are to provide a detachable pocket adapted to be secured to an outer garment or belt of a saleswoman and receive and conveniently hold a sales book or pad; also to provide with a. sales-book pocket a device by which it may at all times beheld open and in readiness to receive a sales book or pad and allow ready access to the same for its removal therefrom, and, further, to provide with the sales-book pocket devices by means of which an article or articles that are necessary to be used by a-saleswoman when attending a customer may be conveniently near the said pocket and ready for use. I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a salesbook pocket embodying the features in this invention. Fig. 2 is a view oi the same from its rear side. Fig. 3 is a View of the saine from its front side, and Fig. e is a sectional view taken at line l in Fig. ilt
The saine letters of reference refer to similar parte throughout the several views.
In the drawings, A is the sales-book pocket, which is comprised by the rear side portion o, front side portion a', and lateral side portions a2 o2, all suitably shaped and secured together, with the rear side portion a preferably extended upwardly above the several other side portions of this pocket, as may be desirable for preventing the sales book or pad B when held therein from having contact with the garment of the wearer. The front side portion a has its upper end portion made, preferably, with the concave form of edge a3, which is adapted to allow the fingers (or thumb) of the hand to readily have contact with the front side of said book or pad when in the pocket. The corners CL4 of this front side portion are preferably made with a convex form, so as to adapt them to give support to the upper half of the book or pad and be free from sharp corners that might injure the lingers or book. This frontside portion a is shown to tlare outwardly, so as to adapt this pocket to hold the sales book or pad in an outwardly-inclined position and thereby so far oft at its upper end from the rear side portion a as to produce an opening between such as will allow the lingers or thumb of a hand to be readily brought into contact with the rear side of the book or pad without necessarily touching the front side portion a of the pocket. E
The several side portions a of o2 d2 of this pocket may be of any suitable material, such as leather or woven or other fabric or a combination of the saine, as may be preferred. I at present prefer to form them of leather or of a strong woven fabric, which may be covered on its outer sides with some other suitable fabric for giving to the outer sides a nished appearance. The side portions a a are preferably stiftened all around at their edges by the wire C, (shown by full and dotted lines in Figs. l and 4,) which wire I prefer to be of spring-steel or spring-brass and made to be continuous or a single piece having its ends meeting, preferably at C, and soldered or otherwise secured together and as a whole forming a light metal frame which is stitched in all around with the material of the side portions in any preferred suitable manner. This metal frame or wire C is shown to be bent at c' c' with preferably an angular form, so as to produce a narrow bottom portion C of the pocket, as shown in Figs. l and 4, The resilient quality of this wire frame is such as to allow the front side portion a to be pressed against or toward the rear side portion a of the pocket without injuring the pocket or permanently setting said portions a o close together, or so as to lessen the opening between or the outward flare of the front side portion a of the pocket, and thereby this quality in this wire frame operates to preserve the pocket open at all times to receive the sales book or pador allow its ready re nioval from the same.
The drawings show a narrow web D, depending from the lower edge ot the front side IOO portion rt of the pocket and having in it eye lets CZ d. These eyelets are adapted to serve as means for securing strings or tapes having attached instruments designed to be used by the saleswoman while attending her customer, which instruments may be a pair of scissors, button-hook, shoe-horn, or other article required to be more or less frequently used by the wearer of the pocket.
E is a pencil-sheath provided at any suitable placekin the front or rear side portion of the pocket. The drawings, Figs.` 1 and 4, show this sheath E to be on the front side ofthe rear sideportion a of the pocket, where it is adapted to hold a pencil E ready for use for writing in the book or pad B.
G is a wall, 0f flexible materiahwhich is suitably joined by its bottom and side edge `margin portions with the rear side wall ct of the pocket, so that it, together with the latter, may forin an open-mouth receptacle having no communication with the interior of the Sales-book pocket and be adapted to hold another or other articles in place for ready use and without affecting the recept-ive condition of the sales-book pocket.
F F are eyelets adapted to receive strings or cords or links or other devices for securn ing to this pocket A a suitable device for attaching the latter to a garment or a belt worn by the saleswoman. v
Figs. l, 2, and 3 show7 a hook Il, adapted to` hold, with a belt, a suitable loop or eye (not shown) secured to au outer garment of the wearer.
I is a strap form-holder provided with suitable openings or eyelets t', whereby instru,- ment-holdingcords or strings 'i' may be secured and hold scissors, button-hook, or other instrument required to be used by the saleswoman when attending a customer.
Having described 1n y invention, what l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
l. In a sales-book pocket, adapted to be suspended from the person of a sales-clerk,- the combination with the rear side wall a having its upper portion extended above the plane of the open end of the pocket so as to adapt said portion of said wall to serve as a shield to guard the dress of the wearer from contact with a hand having access to the pocket, of the outwardly permanently .inclined front side wall ct having its width uniformly equal to that of said rear side wall and its vertical extension, from the lower end of the latter, less than that of said rear wall a distance equal to the length of its dress-guarding portion, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a sales-book pocket, adapted to be suspended from the person of a sales-clerk, the combi nation with the rear side wall a, having vits upper portion extended above the plane of the entrance-opening to the pocket, and adapted to guard the dress of the wearer from having contact with a hand while being in troduced into the pocket, of the outwardly permanently inclining front side wall ct having its width and outline of sides and bottom corresponding with that of said rear wall, be low the said entrance-opening to the pocket, and extending from the lower end of the latter up to opposite the lower end of the dressguarding upper portion of the said rear4 side wall, and having its 'upper margin edgemade with the concave line a3, and its outline of upper corners with convex line a4, or rounded, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a sales-book pocket, the combination with the rear and front side portions d d thereof, of the resilient frame-wire C bent to coliform with the upper end and side edges 0f said side portions of the pocket, and bent on itself at the lower end of the pocket with the wire at the side edges of side portion Ct', of the pocket, flaring outwardly so as to be relatively at an angle to the vertical line of the resilient wire-at the side edges of said side portion a, and theside portions a2 t2 closing the lateral sides of the pocket, whereby the opening of the pocket may be uniformly preserved in both its original form and extension, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
