Description
July 18, 1939. R. u. STALEY UMBRELLA HANDLE Filed March 6, 1939 FLU. STALE-Y Patented July 18, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates generally to umbrellas, and particularly to an umbrella handle.
The main object of this invention is to construct an umbrella handle specially adapted for use by letter carriers.
The second object is to construct an umbrella handle by means of. which an umbrella may be suspended from a mail bag when not in use or can be supported upon the edge of the bag when in use.
The third object is to construct an umbrella handle which will firmly attach a letter carriers umbrella to his mail bag in either a raised or lowered position giving him full use of his hands for the handling of the mail.
These and other objects are accomplished in the manner set forth in the following specification as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a View showing the device applied to a. mail bag.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device showing a portion of the umbrella handle.
Fig. 3 is a section taken along the line 3-3 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section taken along the line l4 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective showing the closed umbrella suspended from the mail bag.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring in detail to the. drawing, there is shown a letter carrier i5 Whose bag ll is provided with a shoulder strap i2 by means of which it is carried. The bag H, such as is commonly used by letter carriers, is provided with a strap l3 at each end thereof along its upper edge It, the straps l3 being attached to the bag by means of the rivets i5.
Referring more particularly to the improved handle, same will be seen to consist of. a shank I6 having an enlarged head ll in which is formed the upwardly extending slot I 3 and the downwardly extending slot IS. The slots 53 and is are preferably rounded at their edges 20 and are also provided with flaring openings M. The 5 slots l8 and i9 are substantially parallel and of a breadth adapted to easily receive the edge i i of the bag H or either of the straps 13.
In the use of the device when the umbrella is being carried to protect the user, the bag edge 10 I4 is inserted in the slot l8 while the strap it occupies the slot 59. It can thus be seen that the handle can be adjusted laterally on the bag H but can not be moved vertically.
If it is desired to carry the umbrella in a low- 16 ered position, as shown in Fig. 5, the edge It is inserted in the slot l9 while the strap I3 occupies the slot 58. Here again the umbrella is adjustable in a lateral direction but cannot accidently become unhooked or lost. 20
In either the raised or lowered positions the bag H and the strap l3 tend to hold the umbrella against lateral swinging.
The handle is preferably made of a hard rubber which is slightly yieldable, and in some cases 25 it will be found desirable to use a softer rubber and to employ a spring steel insert 22 to insure the proper strength and holding action for the handle.
I claim: 30
1. An umbrella handle having upwardly and downwardly extending slots formed therein, each of which is adapted toreceive the material in the upper edge of a mail bag for the purpose of supporting said umbrella in a raised or lowered 5 position.
2. An umbrella handle having upturned and downturned slots formed therein, the ends of said slots flaring outwardly, the bottom of each slot being transversely rounded. 40
RUSSELL U. STALEY.
