LADYS HAND-BAG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 10, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEF OLPP, a subject of the German Emperor, and resident of Pforzheim, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladies Hand-Bags, of which the following is a specification.
Ladies hand-bags of silver or other appropriate material are generally provided with a closure similar to that of a purse, the closure member on one side of the bag folding onto or into the closure member on the other side andbeing fastened thereto. A carrying member is attached to one of the closure members. This kind of closure is, however, disadvantageous in many respects. First of all, the same does very often not work safely enough, so that the bag remains open, even when the user thinks that it is closed. Further, it is generally very difficult to open it wide enough to introduce the hand into the interior of the bag, as the closure members tend to close themselves, thus clamping the hand between them. Finally, the carrying member often becomes separated at one end from the bag, so that the bag must be carried in the hand like a parcel.
The object of the present invention is to overcome these drawbacks, in that the carrying member consists of a rigid strap, which, while making a separate closure unnecessary, prevents the bag from opening when being carried, Such closure permits further an easy and wide opening of the bag so that the hand can be easily introduced and prevents an unintentional folding of the closure members.
The accompanying drawing shows the subject matter of the invention, in a perspective view, as attached to a hand-bag, which is shown in half-open position.
a and a are the two upper halves of the closure members which serve for carrying the hand-bag and which can be folded upon each other and held in this position by a spring tongue 65. With said upper halves the lower halves b and 6 which are attached to the upper edges of the bag, are rigidly connected in such a way that a is integral with b, and a with 12 Both members are pivotally connected by pins 0 and 0 in such a way that they cross each other in scissorlike fashion and can turn on said pins. Upon pressing the upper halves a and a together, they form a handle for carrying the bag, while, at the same time, the lower halves 72 and b fit in each other and thus perfectly plose the bag. The fabric or metal chains, from which the bag is made, are attached to the lower edges of the members 6 and b by means of fine wire. The bagcan be easily opened by unfolding the upper halves a and 4?, whereby also the lower halves b and b are separated from each other and thus the bag is opened, it being kept in open position by the member a being placed as far as possible upon 6, and a upon 6 When carrying the folded upper members in the hand, of course, also the lower members forming the upper edges of the bag cannot be separated even when the bag is excessively filled, so that an absolutely safe closure of same is effected.
I claim:
A closure for ladies hand-bags, comprising in combination two rigid ring-shaped carrying-members pivoted to each other in crossed scissorlike fashion, the lower halves of said members attached to the upper edges of the bag and the upper halves adapted to be folded upon each other and thus to form a handle for carrying the bag with one hand While firmly closing the lower halves upon each other, substantially as described and shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
