To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, CATHERINE Hours, of Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand- Bags, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object to provide a hand bag adapted particularly for use of church goers and to contain prayer books and other accessories such as rosaries, etc.

The invention consists in an improved hand bag or receptacle which I will now proceed to describe and claim.

Of the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view showing my improved hand bag opened. Fig. 2 represents a fragmentary perspective View illustrating the flexibility of a portion of one of the trays hereinafter referred to. Fig. 3 represents a transverse section showing the bag closed.

Similar reference characters indicate the same parts in all the figures.

My improved bag is composed of two relatively shallow trays each of which has a side member 12, an inner edge member 13, an outer edge member 14, and two transverse end members 15, 15 connecting the said inner and outer edge members.

The inner edge members 13 are flexibly connected by a hinge portion 16 which may be integral with the members 13 and is sufliciently flexible to permit the free opening and closing of the bag.

One of the trays is provided with a supplemental side member 17 which is attached at its ends to the transverse end members 15 and constitutes one side of a pocket adapted to receive a prayer book 18. The outer edge member 14c of the tray having the supplemental side piece 17 is flexibly connected at 19 with the side member 12 of that tray and is also connected by two flexible gussets 20' with the transverse edge members 15. This construction enables the outer edge member 14 to be swung outwardly in line with the side member 12, as shown by Fig. 2, to permit the unobstructed insertion and removal of a book 18, the said flexible edge member 1% being adapted to be turned down, as indicated by Fig. 2, to cover the outer edge of the book.

Each of the outer edge members 14: is provided with an outwardly projecting flexible lip 21, said lips meeting when the bag is closed, as shown by Fig. 3. Said lips are provided with complemental fastening members, one of which is preferably a socket 22, and the other a spring stud 23 adapted to detachably engage the socket 22. said socket and stud constitute members of a well known stud and socket fastener. I have here shown two of said fasteners but it is obvious that one or more may be employed if desired.

24 represents a receptacle which may be an ordinary portemonn'aie which is attached to the supplemental side member 17 and is adapted to be inclosed by the other tray, viz., the tray which is not provided with the supplemental side member 17, when the bag is closed.

As here shown, the receptacle 2']: has a mouth frame composed of jaws 25 hinged together at 26 and adapted to be detachably held together by a catch 27. The construction of the receptacle 24 of itself, forms no part of my invention and may be of any suitable character.

The tray which incloses the receptacle 24 is preferably provided with one or more, and preferably two, pockets 28 adapted to receive rosaries or other articles, these pockets being attached to the side member 12 of the said tray and being inclosed in the latter when the bag is closed.

29, 29 represent handles which may be flexible straps attached to any suitable parts of the bag, said handles being here shown as attached to the lips 21.

It will be seen that the operation of closing the bag secures and protects the book 18 contained 1n one of the trays, and the contents of the receptacles 24: and 28 which are then inclosed in the other tray. The flexible connection of the outer edge member 14: of the book-holding tray to the adjacent parts of said tray enables a book to be readily inserted and removed when the bag is open, the book being securely covered and protected when the bag is closed.

I claim 1. An improved hand bag comprising two relatively shallow trays provided at their inner edges with a flexible connection, one of said trays being provided with a supplemental side member forming a pocket, the

2. An improved hand bag comprising two relatively shallow trays provided at their inner edges with a flexible connection, one of said trays being provided with a supplemental side member forming a pocket, the outer edge of the last mentioned tray being flexibly connected with the body of the tray to form a flexible cover, said flexible cover and the corresponding outer edge of the other tray being provided with outwardly projecting flexible lips the inner faces of which are adapted to abut when the bag is closed, and means carried by said lips for detachably connecting the same.

3. A hand bag comprising two trays each composed of a side member, an outer and an inner edge member, and transverse edge members connecting the said outer and inner edge members, the inner edge members of the trays being hinged together, and one of the trays being provided with a supplemental side member forming one side of a book-receiving pocket, the outer edge member of said tray being flexibly connected with the first-mentioned side member and with the transverse edge members to permit the insertion and removal of a book, flexible lips projecting outwardly from the outer edge members of the trays, and provided with complemental fastening members whereby said edge members may be detachably eonnected, and flexible handles at tached at their ends to the said lips, the said fastening members coinciding with the attached ends of the handles whereby said members may be disconnected by a pull ex erted on the handles.
