HAND BAG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1922.
Application filed July 28, 1921. Serial No. 487,756.
Improvements in Hand Bags, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hand-bags of the kind generally known as ladies hand-bags, which bags are of comparatively small size and are adapted to be conveniently carried in the hand and to contain small articles.
Such bags are usually fitted with purses or card-cases which are either carried loosely in the body of the bag or are held'therein in suitable holders. In order to remove the purse it is necessary to open the bag with the consequent danger that in removing the purse some of the other contents of the bag may be accidentally withdrawn.
The objects of this invention are to provide a hand-bag of ornamental and attractive appearance having a detachable purse which is secured in a pocket in the front of the bag and is conveniently located so as to be readily accessible without opening'the vhile the invention is illustrated and described herein with particular reference to hand-bags, it is to be understood that it may be applied to other article-carriers such, for example, as music cases or rolls, and that various modifications may be made in its construction.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hand bag comprising my improvements, and,
ig. 2 is a side view thereof, partly in section.
Having reference now to the drawings it will be seen that the bag comprises a hinged frame 1 provided with clasps 2 and a handle or carrying loop-3, and a bag t, made of leather or other suitable material, suspended from the frame. These parts are all old in the art and may be of any approved construction.
An ornamental, stiff cover 5 is applied to the bag proper 4:, preferably in such manner as to leave compartments between the cover and the front and rear of the bag respectively. The front of the cover 5 is provided with a pocket 6 having its lateral edges stitched to the cover, as at 7 8 indicates a purse or pocket-book having a closing flap 9. The top edge of the pocket 6 is formed with a central straight portion 10 which portion is substantially of the same length as the flap 9, and inclined side portions 1111 which converge towards the straight portion.
The purse 8 is inserted in the pocket 6 with its flap 9 extending over the top edge of the pocket so that the purse will be suspended in the pocket, as seen in Figure 1. The converging portions 11 of the top, of the pocket 6 serve to automatically locate the purse in proper position in the pocket so that it will hang in the middle, and they blend harmoniously with the contour of the flap so as to enhance the ornamental appearance of the bag.
Suitable means may be provided to detachably fasten the purse to the pocket. For this purpose I prefer to employ a separable fastener or catch, having its male member 12 secured to the flap 9 of the purse, and its companion female member secured to the pocket 6. If desired a similar female member may also be secured to the purse, under the flap, so that the flap can be held in closed position when the purse is used apart from the bag.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that my invention not only enhances the ornamental appearance of the bag but also provides a convenient means for carrying a purse in combination with a bag in such mannerthat the purse can be readily removed or replaced without openin the bag.
hat I claim is:
1. A hand-bag having an open pocket on its exterior, a'purse having a flap inserted in the pocket with the flap suspended over the top edge of the pocket, the purse being free from permanent attachment to the bag, and means for detachably fastening the flap to the pocket.
2. A hand-bag having an ornamental cover, a pocket secured to the front of the cover for receiving a purse, the top edge of the pocket having a straight central portion of a length substantially equal to the length of the purse and converging side portions, a purse having a flap, said purse being removably inserted in the pocket with the flap suspended over the straight portion of the top edge of the pocket. and means for detachahly fastening the flap to the pocket.
' 3. A hand-hag having an ornamental stiff cover. a pocket secured to the front of the cover. the top edge of the pocket having a a straight central portion and converging side portions. a purse having a flap removably inserted in the pocket with the flap suspended over the straight portion of the top edge of the pocket, the length of the straight 1e portion being substantially equal to the length of the flap, and a separable-fastener for detachably securing the flap to the pocket having one member thereof carried on the flap and its other member carried on 15 the pocket.
