COMBINATION LADYS HANDBAG AND UMBRELLA COMPARTMENT Filed Jan. 29, 1944 IN V EN TOR.
i Q Q flax sale n 8 A 57' ORNE Y Patented Feb. 5, 1946 @Il&BINA'1-ION LADYS HANDBAG AND UMBREIJLA; COMPARTMENT Max Salem, New York, N. Y. Application January 29, 1944, Serial No. 520,156
1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in ladys handbags, and has more particular reference to a combination ladyis handbag and umbrella compartment.
More specifically; the invention proposes the arrangement of an umbrella compartment within a ladys handbag so that an umbrella may be carried around within the bag and normally be concealed from view. When needed it may easily be removed and used.
The invention proposes to characterize the umbrella compartment by a tubular cloth-like casing disposed within the outer material of the handbag and to one side of the lining.
I A closure is also proposed for an opening on one side of the handbag through which the umbrella compartment is accessible.
The invention also proposes a novel arrangement for holding the umbrella compartment in position.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages therepf, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
' In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a ladys handba constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view similar to Fig. 2 but disclosing a lady's handbag constructed in accordance with a modified form of this invention.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a headed stud used in Figs. 4 and 5.
The combination ladys handbag and umbrella compartment, in accordance with this invention, includes an outer material bag-like member I 0 having an open top H provided with a frame closure 12. The outer material member I0 is provided with the usual inner lining I3. Up to this point the handbag is of conventional construction. It now departs in the provision of a tubular cloth-like casing l4 disposed within said outer material member l0 and to one side of said inner lining l3.
Said tubular casing 14 is provided with an open end I5 having its edge portions attached to the sides of a side opening Hi formed insaid out'ermaterial member ID. The other end l-"l of the tubular casing i4- is" secured to the" adjacent end of the outer material member I 0 witha strap I8. This strap l8 preferably is in the nature of a cloth ribbon.
A closure I9 is provided for closing said opening IS. The closure I9 is illustrated as a conventional slide fastener. The frame [2 is illustrated provided with a lock 20 by which it may be held closed. The handbag is also provided with handles 2| by which it may be conveniently carried around.
The operation and use of follows:
The latch 20 may be opened and then the frame l2 opened in the usual way, and the handbag may be used for carrying the usual articles found in handbags, such as mirrors, vanity cases, kerchiefs, money, and the like, All of these arti cles will be contained in the usual way within the lining I3 and pockets, not shown, on said lining.
The slide fastener [9 may be opened, and an umbrella engaged within the tubular casing Hi. When the slide fastener I9 is closed the umbrella is completely concealed from view. When weather conditions require an umbrella it is proposed that same be removed and used in the conventional way.
In Figs. 4-6 a modified form of the invention has been disclosed which is very similar to the first form of the invention, but distinguishes in the means for holding the closed end ll of the tubular casing l4 adjacent the side of the outer material member III. This means includes a cardboard or the like rigid piece 22 mounted upon the closed end ll of the tubular casing l4 and provided with and supporting a T-shaped headed stud 23. This stud 23 is provided with a washer 24 which is welded to an intermediate position on the stud. The washer 24 engages against the end of the tubular casing I l. The inner end 25 of the stud is riveted outwards for fixedly securthe handbag is as ing and mounting the stud on the closed end ll of said casing M.
A rigid strip 26, preferably made of whalebone, or metal, is secured upon the side of the outer material member III at its top and bottom ends. The strip 26 is provided with apertures 21 at its top and bottom ends which are engaged by stitches 28 used to secure the strip 26 to the outer material member In. The strip 26 is provided with a vertical series of vertical openings 29 through which the head of the stud 23 may be engaged when the head is in a vertical position and which will lock and hold the stud 23 when the head is disposed horizontally.
It is possible to grip the rigid sheet 22 through the lining l3 of the handbag and turn the rigid sheet 22 90 so that the head of the stud 23 may be slipped out from the slot 29 which it engages in the strip 26. The end 11' of the tubular casing M may then be raised or lowered and the stud 23 re-engaged with a different one of said openings 29. This serves to 'hold the inner end H of the tubular casing I4 in selected elevated positions. The advantage of this resides in the fact that the umbrella stored within the tubular casing l4 may be supported in an elevated or in-a lowered position to avoid articles carriedwithin the lining l3 of the handbag.
It is to be understood that the casing 14 may be of any desired size, to accommodate a raincoat instead of an umbrella, or both an umbrella and a raincoat.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of myinvention it is to be understood that I do notlimit myseltto the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the ap nded claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
A combination ladys handbag and umbrella compartment, comprising an outer material baglike member having an open top provided with a closure frame, an inner lining for said bag-like member, a tubular cloth-like casing disposed within said outer material member and to one side of said inner lining and having an open end attached toaside opening in said outer material bag-likemember and its other end being closed,
. a closure for said side opening, and means for holding said closed end adjacent one side of said 'outer material member, comprising a T-shaped headed stud mounted upon said closed end, a
strip mounted upon said side of said outer material member and formed with openings for receiving and holding said headed stud in various positions. MAX SALEM.
