SUNSHADE-FAN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,365, dated March 1, 1881.

Application filed April 16, 1880. (No modell) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES H. DENNIS, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, haveinvented a new and Improved Sunshade Fan, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved sunshade-fan which is'simple in construction, can be folded very compactly, and can be used as a fan or as a sunshade, as the parties using it may desire.

The invention consists in a fan provided with a central joint, having the folds of the fan securely attached thereto, which joint is held to 1 a tube provided with top and bottom disks by a rubber band or like device. The fan can be partially opened to serve as such, the disks of the central tube being used as ahandle; or the fan can be entirely opened to form a circle, and may be locked in this position by a pivoted latch on one of the end pieces of the fan. A folding handle, which is held straight by a suitable ferrule, is passed through the central tube of the fan, which can now he used as a sunshade.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved sunshadefan, showing the same ready for use as a sunshade. Fig.2 is a plan view of the same, showing it partly closed to be used as a fan. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same,showing it closed entirely. Fig. etis a cross-sectional elevation, showing it in the same position. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the handle, showing the same folded for transportation.

A circular shade or fan, A, made of any desired material, is provided with a number of radial folds, B, as is customary in fans, and each of these folds is attached to one of the radial plates, 0, of a central joint, D, of the said fan A. A piece of wood or metal may be attached to the radial pieces 0, or the latter may be lengthened, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, in order to increase the stilfness of the fan. The ends of the fan A are provided with end pieces, E, of wood, metal, rubber, or some other suitable material, and one of these 50 end pieces is provided with a pivoted catch or clasp, F, which catches on the other end piece when the fan is opened to the shape of a circle, and holds the fan in this position. The fan A is loosely held to a tube, G, provided with top and bottom plates or disks, H H, between which the end of the fan fits by a rubber band, J, or like device, passing through the jointed end of the fan and around the tube G.

A handle, K, is made in two parts hinged to each other, and provided with a sliding ferrule, L, by means of which it is held straight when extended. The lower end of the handle K is provided with a ring or band, M, for hanging it onto a ladys belt or holding it. If this band is elastic, it may also be used to hold the handle together when folded. The handle may be made plain or ornamental, and of any desired material. The fan A may also be made plain or ornamental, as may be desired. When closed the outer end of the fan is surrounded and held by an elastic band, N.

The fan is used as follows: When not in use the fan A is folded as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and the handle is folded as shown in Fig. 5. If the fan A is to be used as such, the band Nis removed and the fan is partially opened, as shown in Fig. 2, and the disks H H are used as handles of the fan. If the fan is to be used as a sunshade, it is opened to form a circle, and then the clasp F is closed, so as to hold the two end pieces, E E, together, as shown in Fig. 1. The handle K is then opened and held straight by the ferrule L, and the upper end of the said handle is then passed through thetube G, thus forming a perfect sunshade with the fan A.

The within-described sunshade is very simple in construction, and can be folded conveniently and rapidly.

Having thus described my iuven tion,I claim 0 as new and desire to secure by Letters Patenti 1. As an improved article of manufacture,

a sunshade-fan made substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of a circular 5 folding fan with a central joint, and a tube provided with top and bottom disks, and of a handle the upper end of which ,is passed through said tube, as set forth.
