Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CORNELIUS ST. JOHN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT INCQMBINED FANS AND PARASOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,575, dated November 11, 1873; application filed v March 8, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS ST. JOHN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combined y Fan and Parasol; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The invention consists in a fan and parasol combined and constructed in the manner hereinafter described.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings,
" Figure l represents my invention opened for a fan; Fig. 2, the fan closed, and Fig. 3, fan opened for a parasol.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several iigures.
of its width, the folded edge of the paper forming the outer edge of the fan. The paper being then crimped as before stated, the two outermost folds are secured by glue or otherwise to side pieces B B', the upper ends of y these side pieces being beveled to correspond with a bevel to which the upper end of the body A has been eut, and the lower end of said side pieces extending below the lower edge of said body. Through the upper ends of the side pieces B B', and through the upper end of the bodyv A, is passed an elastic strap,
0 a, and to and near the upper end of the side piece B is riveted a stad, C. This staff is made preferably of some hard and tough wood. The rivet b, by which the staff is secured, is provided on its inside with a frictionpad, c, hereinafter described. When the fan is closed it remains confined to the staff O, as shown in Fig. 2, and when opened the side piece B is turned back until it-lies nearly par allel with the opposite side of the staif C, bringing the staff nearly `between the two sides B B. In this position it is conned by the elastic band d, which is shown in Figs. l and 2. W'hen it is desiredthat the fan should act as a parasol it is simply turned on the staff C around the rivet b, as shownin. Fig. 3, or at any angle desired, the friction-pad o allowing the side piece B to turn freely, but yet at the saine time, by its elasticity, holding the fan in any position it may be turned on the staff without liability of the positionbeing changed.
In order to let the staff lie snugly between the side pieces B B it is formed with a ilat tened surface.
The object in cutting the side pieces and upper edge of the fan angular is that when the fan is opened it will assume a slightly` conical form, as shown in Fig. 3. y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y 1. A eoinbinedfan and parasol, consisting of a body, side pieces, beveled inner edges, riveted handle, and friction-pad, combined and arranged for operation substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a combined fanand parasol having itshandle secured to one of the side pieces by a rivet, the friction-pad, arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.w CORNELIUS ST. JOHN. Witnesses: H. L. WATTENBERG, G. M. PLYMPTON.
