UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUGENE THAYER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MUSlC-SATCHEL.
$PECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,569, dated March 23,1886.
Application filed January 2, 1886. Serial No. 187,491.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE THAYER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Music-Satchels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of one of my improved music-satchels, part being broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional end elevation of the same, taken through the line 00 m, Fig. 1, part being broken away;
The object of this invention is to provide music-satchels constructed in such a manner that the music carried in them will not be injured or prevented from lying smoothly upon a music-rack.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the music-satchel, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents the cover or case of the musicsatchel, which may be made of leather, cloth, or other suitable material, and is nailed or otherwise secured at its end edges to the edges of the ends B. Each end B is in ovoid form, may be made of wood or other suitable material, and is in two equal parts, the plane of division being in the longest axis of the said ends. By thus dividing the ends and securing them to theflexible covering,thesatchel may be opened wide for the reception of the sheet-music, which may be laid therein without rolling. Upon closing the satchel the sheet-music will be brought into ovoid form, to correspond to the contour of the case, and will not coil up when taken out for use. The parts of the bisected ends 13 are kept from lateral movement upon each other by dowel-pins O, which may be permanently attached to one part and enter dowel-pin holes in the other part, or may be inserted in holes leading through one of the said parts and into the other part. The latter arrangement is shown in Fig. 2; or the parts of the ends can be kept from lateral movement (No model.)
upon each other by being connected by hinges, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. One side edge of the case A can be extended, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so as to serve as a flap to overlap the other edge and cover theclosed mouth of the satchel. The satchel is held shut by one or more straps, D, buckled around it, andis provided with a handle, E, for convenience in carrying it.
The satchel is designed to be made of such a size that when one or more sheets of music are placed within it the edges of the said sheets will meet, or nearly meet, at the mouth of the satchel, so that the sheets of music will not.
receive a permanent curve from being placed in the satchel and be thus prevented from lying smoothly upon a music-rack when being used, as is the case when music is rolled in the ordinary manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A musicsatchel consisting of a flexible cover having attached to the inside thereof at each end a pair of semi-ovoid or semicircular end pieces arranged at a slight distance from each other, so that when the cover is rolled the said end pieces are folded to form the ends, substantially as set forth.
2. A music-satchel consisting of a flexible cover having attached to the inside thereof at each end a pair of folding semi-ovoid or semicircular end pieces, the adjacent faces of which are provided, respectively, with a pin and an aperture therefor, to prevent lateral movement of the sectional ends when folded, substantially as set forth.
3. A music-satchel consisting of a flexible cover having attached to the inside thereof at each end a pair of folding semi-ovoid or semicircular end pieces having apertures in alignment, and the sliding pin 0, extending from the outside of the case at the end into the said apertures, substantially as set forth.
EUGENE THAYER.
