BOOK HOLDING D-EVIUE.
No. 273,886. Patented Mar.13,1883'.

new YORK, N. Y.
BOOK=HOLDING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming .part of Letters Patent No. 273,886, dated March 18, 1883.
Application filed November 24, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ADoLPH Pas rue, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Holding Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has tor its object to cheapen the manufacture and increase the convenience in use of book-holding devices by simplifying the means and construction employed; and it consists generally in such combinations of the covers ofthe books themselves with other parts as are hereinafter specticially described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a transverse section on the plane in x of a device embodying my improvement in its preferred form, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
A and B are the two books to be held. One cover of the book A has on its outer surface the pocket a, which is adapted to receive one cover of the book B, as shown in the drawings. The other cover of the book A is provided with a clasp, b. The book B has one cover 0 that is adapted to be received into the pocket a on book A. The other cover of the book B is prolonged into a flap, c, which is adapted, in any usual way, to take over and be secured by the clasp'b, as shown in the drawings.
0 is a handle, which is ofany usual construction and applied in any usual way. It may be employed or not, as desired.
D is a coin or currency pocket, which is shown in the drawings as being secured to the inner surface of the cover whose prolongation forms the flap o. This coin-pocket may be sccured to either cover of either book, preferably on the inner side of the same, so long asit does not interfere with the operation of the pocket c, and is so placed as to have its opening or mouth upward when the books are being carried by means of the handle, so as thereby to avoid the danger of dropping out and losing the contents of such coin-pocket. I prefer to employ both the handle (J and the coin- 5o pocket I) in my device.
It is evident that the details of the device shown in the drawings may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention. For example, the pocket a may be varied to 5 any extent in shape and form, and may be mounted rigidly or detachably, and on either book, so long as it furnishes the means of securing the two books together on their adjacent sides, substantially as is shown. The clasp b may be of any construction, and may be mounted in any position on the outer surface of either outer cover, so long as it serves to clasp'and hold the flap c; and the flap 0 may be of any construction, and may be either 6 integrally or detachably a prolongation of either outer cover, so long as it holds the two outer covers of the two books together at a point opposite their backs when secured in op-' erative position by the clasp b, substantially as is shown.
\Nhatl claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The books A and 13, having one of their adjacent covers provided with a pocket to hold 7 5 the other adjacent cover, and having one of their outer covers provided with a flap to take over and be secured by a clasp, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a bookholding device consisting of the book A, having a pocket, a, on the outer face of one cover, and a clasp, I), on the outer face of the other cover, and the book B, having one cover adapted to fit into the pocket to and the other cover prolonged into a flap, c, to overlap and be secured by the clasp b, and provided with a handle,0, substantially asand for thepurposes set forth.
