Specification of Letters Patent.

To aZZ whom it may concern: i There are two of these indicated Be it known that l, ROBERT H. DURAND, a E, represents extension bars. citizen of the United States, and resident l two sets of these bars. of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have l, invented a new and Improved Outing-Steel, y of which the following is a full, clear, and ex- 1 act description.

This invention has for its object to provide an outing stool, simple in construction, effective in operation, durable in use, and adapted to be closed into a very small space, neat in appearance, and so arranged as to be readily carried by the user in the hand or by letter B. rf`here are They are fastened to the inside of the edges of the box form legs. There is a small metal plate F, Which fastens with screws M., to inside of edges of box formed legs, and to plate F., the short bars EZ., are pivoted at K, and at Kl. The bars Eg, are pivoted to bars E, the bars i are pivoted in center at IQ, the ends of bars E, are bent at right angles at El. so that they will have a wide bearing against the inside of box formed legs B, and thus by having a wide bearing, they prevent box formed legs B from wearing by friction against box. llThen plate F, is screwed to the center of edges on inside of box formed legs B, the ends of bars E, at El, touch the inside of box formed legs, an d when the box form legs are separated by putting the fingers in and pulling on the loops G, the center plate on which bars Fiz, are pivoted, remain stationary, but the ends of bars FJ, at El, come closer together but work parallel with inside of box formed legs B, and when at proper distance, act as braces.

In closing, the extension bars act reversely and bent ends El., go farther apart until when box is closed, the extension bars are hid from view.

ln opening or closing, bars E, EZ, all the pivots act as bearings, and bars work easily on them. l/Vhen the two box form legs are separated, they should be separated far enough to allow the hinge strap (l, to drop down in between the small lugs D, which are located on the top ends of box formed. legs B. Then when top is put on box formed legs B, and the hinge, straps under top A, are in between lugs D, the box. formed legs B, can be slightly pushed together about inch, and the lugs D, which appear between slats of top A, in Fig. i, pass over the hinge strap C, thus holding top A, and when taking hold of top A, the whole seat can be lifted. These lugs D, appear thus, two on one box side or leg, and one on the other box side or leg so that they fit between the slats of seat A, which are about inch apart, andv by putting lugs D in the manner described, the box formed legs B, can be closed, and the lugs D, do not interfere with each other.

Then taking top or seat off, put fingers in loops G, on outside of the box formed legs B, and pull them slightly apart about inch, till lugs D have cleared themselves from off with a strap over the shoulder as one would carry a satchcl.

This invention consists in the novel construction and simple combination of parts in the as is hereinafter described and defined appended claim.

Reference is to be had to the acoompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l, is a perspective view of the improved seat arranged for service. Fig. 2, is a view of the under-side of the seat. Fig. 3, is a fragmentary view ol the under side of the seat, on a larger soale showing the mode of folding the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the box form sides or legs, slightly separated, and shows the top folded and placed between ready as it were to be closed. Fig. 5 shows a detail view of the extension bars. There being two of these in a stool. Fig. 6, is an end elevation of the device or of the box formed legs showing how the extcnsion bars are connected to the legs, and the braciug effect the extension bars have on the legs. Fig. 7 represcnts a perspective view of the device in its closed position.

This invention has Vfor its object a seat to be carried, and when a temporary seat is required, it can be easily adjusted for service, and will support a weight of 300 or 400 pounds, and will not sink into the ground or the sand.
