PONTIAC, ILLINOIS.
DESK.
Application filed. August 10,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IDA M. TINDALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pontiac, in the county of Livingston and 1 State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Desk, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of this invention to provide a desk, so constructed that its movable parts may be disposed in such a way as to serve as a closure for the desk, to serve as an inclined support of relatively small area, upon which sketches may be made, and to of greatly inserve as an inclined support creased area, likewise adapted for sketching purposes.
Another object of the invention is to provide a means whereby these movable parts of the device may be maintained in their respective positions.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a perspective of a desk constructed in accordance with my invention, the movable parts thereof being disposed in a position to serve as a support for sketches of relatively lar e area; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the des showing the lid closed down upon the top of the desk; and Fig. 3 is an end elevation showing the lid raised into an inclined position, the extension of the lid resting upon the rear of the frame; the view delineating the positions which the parts of the device will assume, when a sketch of comparatively small area, is to be made.
In carrying out the invention, an open rectangular frame 1 is provided, the same having a bottom, and being provided in its front side, with a drawer 2. The body of the device, consisting of the open frame 1 and its bottom, is supported upon suitable legs 3. A lid 4 is hinged at its forward edge to the forward edge of the frame 1; an this lid 4 is of sufficient size so that it will extend beyond the rear edge of the frame 1 to constitute a closure therefor.
The lid 4 has at its forward edge, an outstanding ledge 5, adapted to receive pencils and the like, when the device is positioned as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. An extension 6 is hinged to the rear edge of the lid 4 and arranged to hang pendent at the rear of the frame 1, as seen most clearly in Fig. 2. Rigid braces 8 are united by means of hinges 12, with the frame 1 at the rear thereof. These braces are united by a cross bar 9, and are arranged to hang pendent between Specification of Letters Patent.

the extension 6 and the frame 1. A pair of auxlliary braces 13 are provided, the same consisting of hingedly connected parts. One end of each of these auxiliary braces 13 1s hinged to the bottom of the body of the device adjacent the'rear of the open rectangular frame 1. The other end of each of the auxiliary braces 13 is hinged to the lid 4 adjacent the rear edge thereof. When the device is disposed as shown in Fig. 2, the auxiliary braces 13 are foldable between the lid 4 and the bottom of the body of the desk.
As seen to best advantage in Fig. 1, the lid 4 and the extension 6 are arranged to be alined in a common plane, inclined with respect to the frame 1. In the rear face of the extension 6, there are a plurality of notches 7 in which the free ends of the rigid braces 8 may be successively mounted. The free ends of the braces 8 are beveled, as denoted by the numeral 10, to facilitate their insertion into the notches 7. The beveled ends 10 of the braces 8 may be inserted into the notches 7, successively, thus permitting the lid 4 and the extension 6 to be disposed at different angles with respect to the frame 1, the forward tilting of the parts 4 and 6 being limited only by the auxiliary braces 13.
If desired, as shown in Fig. 3, the extension 6 may be folded to rest upon the rear edge of the frame 1; and in such a case, the auxiliary braces 13 constitute a means for maintaining the lid 4 at an angle to the frame. Under such conditions, as shown in Fig. 3, the braces 8 will hang pendent at the rear of the frame.
When the parts are positioned as shown in Fig. 1, the device may be used in the making of large sketches; when disposed as shown in Fig. 3, for the making of small sketches; and when disposed as shown in Fig. 2, for the making of mechanical drawings and the like, which are ordinarily executed upon a horizontal surface.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A device of the class described including a body consisting of an open frame and a bottom; a lid hinged at its forward edge to the forward edge of the frame and arranged to extend beyond the rear edge of the frame to constitute a closure therefor; an extension hinged to the rear edge of the lid and arranged to hang pendent a't'the rear ofthe frame; a rigid brace hinged to the frame at the rear thereof and arranged tolhan'g-pendent between the extension and the frame; and an auxiliary brace consisting of hingedly connected parts, one end of which auxiliary brace is hinged to the bottom of the body adjacent the rear of the frame, the other end of the auxiliary brace being hinged to the lid adjacent the rear edge thereof, the auxiliary brace being foldable between the lid and the bottom of the body; the lid and the extension being arranged to be alined brace'is adapted to be successively engaged when the lidand the extension are alined; the extension being foldable to rest upon i the rear edge of the frame; and the auxiliary brace constituting a means for maintaining the lid at'an angle to the frame whenthe extension is thus folded.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as'my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
IDA M. TINDALL.
