UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE.
DANIEL L. WILOOX, OF PAWTUGKET, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE D.
L. VVILOOX MANUFACTURING COMPANY.
\DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.346,'795,dated August 3, 1886.
Application filed January 4, 1886. Serial No. 187,576. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL L. WiLoox, of Pawtuoket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Desks, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my.i1nproved desk with the lid reversed and held in position to be written or marked upon on its under side. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical Fig. 3 is a view of a portion of the folding back removed.
A represents the desk-body, B the desk-top, and G the legs or frame, all constructed substantially as usual. D is the lid, which consists of an ordinary slate, such as is used in the common schools, whose frame D is centrally pivoted at its ends to the rods E, whose opposite ends are pivoted to the opposite ends of the desk-body at such points that the lid, when closed, lies upon the body in the ordinary position of a desk-lid. By pivoting the lid centrally, as shown, either surface may be placed uppermost, as desired. The under surface of the lid has the slate portion bare, so that it can be written or marked upon by an ordinary slate-pencil, while the upper surface of the slate portion is covered with a piece of enameled cloth or other suitable substance commonly used for desk-lid covers.
In order that the desk-lid or slate may be capable of being-used while in a nearly vertical position, two hooks, H, are pivoted at H to the opposite inner sides of the desk-body, and are held normally inthe positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2 by the springs it. These springs are so light that, while they are sufficiently strong to raise the weight of the hooks into the positions shown, they are not heavy enough to sustain the additional weight of the lid, so that when the lid'is closed the hooks are pressed down to the level of the upper ally rise and form resting-places for the lower 5 edge of the lid or slate. J is the back piece, to which, at I, are hinged the two end pieces, K, said end pieces being held in place on the top of the desk by means of the dowel-pins K. If the desk is to bemoved, the end pieces and back may be removed and folded together.
My invention is applicable to desks of various kinds, such as school desks, knockdown desks, 85c.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the desk-body A, hooks H, pivoted thereto, springs h, lid D, and rods E, pivotally connecting said lid and deskbody, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the top B of the desk, of the back piece, J, and end pieces, K, hinged to said back piece and removably secured to said top, substantially as and for the purpose described.
DANIEL L. XVILCOX.
