L J Snoentoz SADIA HYDE, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
FOLDING TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 18, 1909.
Patented Apr. 19, 1910. Serial No. 502,957.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SADIA I-Iyon, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to foldable table tops, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the elliciency and utility of devices of this character.
The improved device is designed to be employed in connection with an ordinary table, stand, or like structure, and comprises a foldable detachable top, whereby the area of an ordinary table top or stand may be increased, without change of any kind in the table structure.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved device. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view from beneath of the improved device. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the improved device in folded position, and enlarged.
The improved device comprises a table top formed of a plurality of hingedly united leaves, and for the purpose of illustration four of these leaves are shown at 10-11-1213. The central pair of leaves 1112 are united by hinges 14 connected to permit the leaves to be folded downwardly. The leaf 10 is hinged at 15 to the leaf 11, in position to be folded downwardly or upon the leaf 11, while the leaf 13 is hinged at 16 to the leaf 12 in position to be folded downwardly and upon the leaf 12. By this means the leaves 1112 are foldable against each other, the leaf 10 foldable against the leaf 11, and the leaf 13 foldable against the leaf 12, as shown in Fig. 4. This arrangement permits the table top comprised by the foldable leaves to be arranged within a relatively small space when not in use, or for storage or shipment. The lower side of the leaf 12 is provided with a longitudinally arranged rib 18, while the lower face of the leaf 11 is provided with a similar longitudinally arranged rib 17 the two ribs corresponding to the side edges of the table, stand, or other structure on which the foldable top is designed to be supported, and will be varied in distance apart to correspond to the width of table top with which the device is to be employed. For the purpose of illustration the ribs are shown arranged in parallel relations corresponding to an ordinary oblong library table, the upper portion of which is indicated at 19, but it will be understood that the space defined by the ribs may be varied to any required extent without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
The lower surface of the leaves 1112 within the area defined by the ribs 1718 will be covered with felt 20, or like fabric to protect the top of the table member 19, and the inner faces of the ribs 17-18 are likewise provided with the felt material. The improved device may be formed of any desired shape or outline and will be found very convenient for use in households where space is limited, so that when required a table surface of relatively extensive area may be quickly provided with little trouble and relatively slight expense. The members 1011-12-13 will preferably be of wood, of any required quality, and will be polished and ornamented to any required extent. The members 11-12 are provided with swinging supports 2l22 to support the leaves 10-13 when in open position, the members 2l22 being arranged to swing in parallel relations to the members 17-18 when not in use, as shown in Fig. 4.
WVhat is claimed is A supplemental table top formed of two inner leaves hingedly united at their adjacent edges, two outer leaves hingedly united respectively to the outer edges of the inner leaves, the hinges of the inner leaves being arranged to permit them to fold inwardly with their upper faces against each other and the hinges of the outer leaves being arranged to permit the lower faces of the outer leaves to fold against the upper faces of the inner leaves, and stop ribs carried by the inner leaves upon their lower faces and corresponding in distance apart to the top member of a table, and means for supporting said outer leaves in open position. 10
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
