Q/Uihwmw JOHN w. LINDow, orsEAT'rLE, WASHINGTON.
coLLAPsiBLn TABLE.
Y Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 7, 1909.
Application iled- August 14, 1908. Serial No. 448,615.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN V. LINDow, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Tables, of which the following is a specification.4
My invention aims primarily to provide an improved construction of the above mentioned type, which aside from being comparatively simple in construction land durable, embraces certain features which render the construction verygserviceable.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing, in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout: Figure l is a view in side elevation of my improved table, the hinged leaves being elevated. Fig. 2 is a view in top plan thereof, a portion of the table top being broken away, and Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of the invention with the hinged leaves folded down.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a table top comprising a relatively iixed central portion l, and end sections or leaves 2 hinged to said central portion l by hinges, as 3, whereby they can be' swung down, as illustrated in Fig. 3, or elevated` to form with central portion l a table top of considerable area (see Figs. l and 2).
Central portion 1 of the table top is preferably of such width as to be useful without the addition of sections or leaves 2, as where a comparatively small table is desired.
Reference numeral 4 indicates legs supported for swinging outwardly from beneath the central portion l of the table top, whereby when the table top is in extended form, a pair of legs can be arranged directly beneath each section 2.
Arranged beneath the table top is a shelf having' a central portion la to which are secured end sections l", corresponding in arrangement to sections 2 of the table top.
To pivotally support legs Li, I provide upper and lower supports 5 and 6 respectively, in the form of disks, to the underfaces of `which arms 7 andv8,.1ixed to said legs, are pivoted, as by screws 9, said arms being cut out at their inner end portions to fit about the edge portions of their supports, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
By cutting out the inner end portions of arms 7, and 8, the upper facesof said arms will lie approximately iush with the upper faces of the supports to which they are ivoted and provide extended bearing suraces on which, the table top and shelf, when in` extended form, can have a direct bearing. VArs-now considered the table top and the shelf are-secured in position on the supports 5 and 6 by the screws 9 (see Fig. l).
By arranging the shelf on support 6 and having the inner end portions of arms 8 disposed beneath said support, the shelf can be used when the table is in both extended andnnextended position as will be readily understood.
. When the table is unextended sections 1b are swung down (see Fig. 3) and the opposite pairs of legs are' arranged in parallel relation beneath the central portion l of the table top, where they are held from accidental movement by suitable stops 9 and the adjacent lowered sections 2.
Suitable stops l0, secured to the undersides of sections 2 limit the outward swinging of legs l and stops 9 on the under face of the central section l, limit the inwardly swinging'movement of said legs.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim` as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America is:l
l. A. table comprising a top embodying a relatively fixed rectangular central section and end sections hinged thereto to swing to horizontal and vertical positions, a circular block constituting a leg support iixedly secured to the under face of the central section ofthe table top centrally of the length ofthe latter, a pluralityof supporting legs each provided at their upper ends with arms integral with the legs and extending at right angles to the legs and being cut away on their upper faces at thefree ends thereof, the said cut away portions of said arms receiving the said leg support and the upper faces of the arms beingulush with the upper face of the leg support whereby an extended bearing is provided for the end sections of the top when said sections are supported in the raised position, the said arms being pivoted to the said leg support whereby the arms and legs can be swung inwardly underneath the central section of the table top and outwardly at an angle thereto for supporting the end sections of the table top, stops carried by the end sections of the table top for limiting the outward swinging of the arms and legs, and stops carried by Vsecured to the under face of the central secf` v vided for the end sections of the top when the under face of the central section for l limiting the inward swinging of said arms and legs.
2. A table comprising a top embodying a relatively fixed rectangular central section and end sections hinged thereto to swing to horizontal and vertical positions, a circu lar block constituting a leg support Xedly said sections are supported in the raised position, the said arms being pivoted to the said leg support whereby the arms and legs can be swung inwardly underneath the eentral section of the table top and outwardly at an angle thereto for supporting the end sections of the table top, a shelf beneath the table top comprising a. central rectangular central section and two end sections hinged thereto, a leg support secured to the under face of said central section, and arms pivoted at their inner ends to the said leg support, and at their outer ends connected to said legs, said arms cut away at their pivoted ends to receive the leg support and having their upper faces flush with the leg support whereby the arms form an extended bearing for the end sections when the latter are in the raised position.
