SANFORD R. MOORE, OF EGAN, DAKOTA TERRITORY.
EXTENSION-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,574, dated November 30, 1886.
Application filed March 5, 1886.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, SANFORD R. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Egan, in the county of Moody and Territory of Dakota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Extension-Tables, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in eX- tension-tables; and it consists of the peculiar and novel construction and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The primary object of my invention is to provide an improved extension-table which when folded occupies a very small space, to provide hinged sections of the side rails that lie fiat against one another when folded, and to provide stopblocks for the hinged sections to abut against and to relieve the strain on the hingesl and fastening devices for securing the end sections of the table together.
The table is very simple and strong in its construction and thoroughly effective in operation and easy of adjustment.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation showing the table extended and having the removable leaves therein. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the table with the leaves removed and the end sections and side rails folded together.
Referring to the drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures, A B designate the end sections of the table, each of which comprises the legs a, having the cross-bar a, connecting the legs, a rigid top section, b, and a section, b', of the side rails, C. The legs are arranged in pairs, and the top-section I) has a foldable leaf, b2, hinged thereto and held in its extended position by means of a pivoted block, b3, or other suitable fastening device. The sections b of the side rails, O, are providedwithdowelpins and sockets c c, and with blocks C', rigidly secured on the inner faces thereof at a distance from the free edge.
D designates the sections of the side rails, which are of equal number and size at or near each side edge of the table-top, and these sections of each side rail are hinged together on opposite side faces of their ends, as at d', so
4or B of t-he table.
Serial No. 194,162. (No model.)
that they can fold flat against one another, as shown in Fig. 2, the end section of each rail being hinged to the blocks C', so that when the table is folded together the edges of the sections b will abut together, whereby the dowel-pins therein will enter the sockets to connect the end sections A B of the table together. A
E designates stop-blocks, which are rigidly secured to the under surface of the top-section b, near their opposing edges, and when the table is folded together the sections D thereof fold together within the edges of the tabletop and abut against said blocks to relieve the strain on the hinges and hold the sections D securely and rigidly in place.
F designates the removable top-sections, which are adapted to rest on and be supported by the sections D of the side rails when the latter are unfolded, and each leaf or topsco-v tion F is provided on opposite edges with dowel-pins and sockets therefor to fit into and receive dowel-pins and sockets on the adjacent leaves of the tabletop, as will be very readily understood.
G designates a hook, which is pivoted at one end to one of the top-sections b, and confined or held in place by stop-pins g, located on each side of the shank thereof, and the free end of the hook engages a staple or pin, G', on the other section b of the opposite end section A The side-rail sections b of the end section A of the table have pivoted hooks I on their inner faces between the latter and the end sections D of the foldable side rails, and the similar sections, b, of the end section B of the table have pins lsecured on their inner faces, whereby the end sections IOO my invention, as'I am aware that changes therein can be made.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to provide an extension-table with foldable side 'rails which comprise a series of hinged sections that are adapted to fold together; but in my improved table I provide the end sections A B with stop-blocks E, which are arranged near the free edges of the top-section b and 1o with suitable fastening devices. When the table is folded'to its most compact form, the hinged blocks or sections D of the side rails thereof lie or abut together within the edges ofthe top, and the end blocks D bearagainst 15 the, stop-blocks E, Which'serve to hold and brace ,the blocks D in their folded .position and relieve the strain on the hinges thereof,
the table-sections A B being secured or con-l what I claim as new, and desire to securev by Letters Patent, is l In an extension-table, the combination of 25 the end sections A B, carrying the side blocks,
b', and the shorter blocks,C, arranged in rear of the blocks b', the blocks D, hinged together and to the blocks C', and forming the side rails of the table when the latter is extended, 3of
