VINCENT A. IENUEZ, OF MICHIGAN GITY, INDIAKA;
FOLDING TABLET;-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,282, dated July 17, 1883.
Application filed March 14, 1853. (No model vdeclare the following to be a full, clear, and
enact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and
to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tables, having for its object to facilitate the folding of the same for shipment or removal from place to place; and it consists of a fixed central section or piece, to which are secured legs supported upon a common foot or support, preferably provided with casters, said legs having cleats or bars, one being arranged upon that side of its leg opposite to that side upon which the other bar or cleat is arranged upon its leg; the other two legs of the table, there being four, having two leaves, one hinged to each side of the fixed center piece, said latter legs being hinged to the under side of the center piece or section and to the leg-connecting piece or foot of said center piece, so as to move or fold in opposite direc tions, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an end view, with one leaf folded or lowered,
of my improved. table. Fig. 2 is a side view, also with one leaf lowered or folded, of the same; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed view of the hinges of the folding legs, viewed from the under side, the dotted lines representing them in a folded position.
In carrying out'my invention I employ a central fixed section or piece, A, to the under side of which are fastened the legs A, united together at their upper ends by means of the board a, which may have the form of molding, said board being fastened to the upper portions of the legs and to the center piece or section, the lower ends of said legs being mortised into or secured to a common support or foot, A preferably provided with casterb. The legs A are braced together about at the middle by the cross-bar A, the points of conjunction between the legs and the crossbrace A and the foot A being suitably braced, as at 0. Upon one side of one leg is secured the oleat or bar (I, and upon the opposite side of the other leg is secured a similar cleat or bar, the purpose of which will be apparent presently.
B B are two leaves hinged, one to each side of the center piece, A, and supported upon folding legs 13 B, consisting each of two uprights fastened to an upper and a lower crosspiece, B B hinged by means of curved plates C, (see Fig. 3,) the plates of the lower crosspieces of the folding legs being pivoted to the common foot A of the legs of the center piece, A, while the plates of the upper crosspieces are pivoted to the bottom of a slot, 6, in the board a of said center piece, said plates being oppositely curved to enable the. legs to swing or open and close in opposite directions. The foot-pieces of the legs are preferably supplied with casters 0'. It will be noticed that when the hinged legs are closed or folded against the center leg, to allow the leaves to fold down, as shownby the folded one in Figs. 1 and 2, the said folded legs will stand in the same plane with the cleats or bars d where their leaves 13 are hooked, as at f, or otherwise suitably secured in position, as seen in Fig. 1, to protect them as against damage, and from vibration when being removed or shipped from place to place.
To the underneath pieces of the leaves 13 are secured spring-catches g, which pass through apertures g in the upper crosspieces, B of the legs 13, when the legs are swung outward to support the leaves, as seen in Fig. 2, to prevent the accidental movement of the legs when thus supporting the leaves. Knobs 71. may be applied to the legs B to permittheir ready and convenient movement by the hand.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a table, a top composed of the narrow center piece and leaves, as described,-i 11 combe flush with the outer edge of the central portionof the top, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VINCENT A. MEN UEZ.
