UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM M. FOSKETT, OF LE MARS, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED IRONING-BOARD AND CUTTING-TABLE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No'. 201,605, dated March 26, 1878; application filed March 4,1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. FosK rT, of Le Mars, in the county of Plymouth and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Combined Ironing-B card and Cutting-Table; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation Fig. 2 is a plan View, with side board attached, to be used as a cutting-table. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the side board.
This invention has relation to ironing-boards used in the laundry, and the object or purpose'thereof is to render said board readily convertible into a cutting-table, for the use of cutting patterns, dresses, or other garments, as will be hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a rectangular table, having a slightlyreduced or tapering end similar to the ordinary ironing-boards. The table A has upon one of its sides a covering, a, of suitable material, this side of the table being designed to be used as an ironing-board.
The reverse sidea of the table, when used as a cutting-table, has secured thereto a side board, B, provided upon its edges with pins 12, which enter holes in the edge of the table. The board B has cleats c secured to its under side, which project out from the edge of the board sufiiciently to act as braces in steadying it, and also to prevent any weight upon said board from bending or otherwise injurin g the pins 1).
It will be noticed that the board B, near one of its ends, is slightly wider, and has an irregular curve, the reverse of that upon the end of the table A, so that when the board is secured in place a perfect joint will be formed between the meeting edges of the tableA and side board B.
To one end of the table A is secured a metal shelf or stand, d, provided with perforations, the purpose of which is to hold or support the;irons when not in use. This shelf or stand, if desired, may be formed with a rim around its sides, so that, when the table A is in a reversed position for use as a cutting-table, the shelf or stand may serve as a holder for spools of thread, needles, scissors, or other similar articles needed within reach while the cutting-table is being used.
One end of the table A is pivoted to legs or supports e, braced by cross-pieces f; or any other suitable frame may be used to support one end of the table, while the other end rests on a chair, Window-sill, or other convenient object.
When the table is in position for use the legs 6 are retained in an upright position by a brace, g, pivoted at one end to the edge of the table, a recess, h, in its lower end fitting over one of the cross-pieces f.
The brace g is not a permanent fixture to thetable, the pin being rigidly secured to the brace and working in a hole in the edge of the table; and when the table is required to be used as a cutting-table, the brace may be removed and placed upon the opposite side. When the table is not in use, it may be folded upon its'support or frame and put away in a convenient place.
I am aware that an ironing-table consisting of a board having hinged folding legs at one end, supported by a brace hinged to the under side of the table or board, and engaging with the legs, is old; also, that auxiliary strips capable of attachment to the sides of the board, to extend its surface and convert it into a work-table, is not new, and I therefore do not wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, any of these features; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The legs 6, pivoted to the edges of the board A, and at the extreme'end thereof, in combination with the detachable brace g, pivoted to the edge of the board, and engaging with the bars f on legs 0, said board A being provided with a detachable strip, B, adapted to be secured to the side thereof, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimonythat I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM M. FOSKETT.
