UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELLSVVORTH A. LOOMIS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
EXTENSION-TAB LE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,727, dated March 3, 1896.
Application filed July 5, 1895. $erial1l'o. 555,080- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLSWORTH A. Looms, of Chicago, in the State of Illinois, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to knockdown extension-tables, and one of the objects of my improvements is to provide a knockdown extension-frame.
Another of the objects is to provide vertically-adjustable rollers for a flexible top arranged to be rolled up at the ends of the frame.
I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of an extension-table containing my improvements, the legs being shown in fragment and the table being contracted. Fig. 2 is a similar view to that shown in Fig. 1, the table being extended. Fig. 3 is a fragment of a bottom plan view, the legs being shown in section. Fig. 4 is a detail showing a fragment of a transverse vertical section through one of the sliding rails at the side of the extension-frame. Fig. 5 is a detail showing a transverse vertical section of a fragment of the table on the line of the center legs. Fig. 6 is a detail showing a top view of one of the corner-legs together with its means of attachment to the frame and some ornamental brackets. Fig. 7 is a detail showing an enlarged longitudinal vertical section of a fragment of the flexible table-top. Fig. Sis a detail showing a top view, partly in section, of an adjustable bracket and its means of attachment to the frame.
In the drawings, A designates the flexible top, which is made of a series of slats secured to a canvas or other flexible piece of material of the proper dimensions to cover the width and greatest extension of the table.
A designates rollers or shafts journaled in suitable bearings in adjustable brackets A one at each end of the extensible frame.
a designates a pin which fastens the flexible top to the frame or bed-piece on which the top rolls, and a designates a crank-handle on the end of each of the shafts.
B designates the corner-1egs,having a square recess 1) cut out of the upper corner and provided with ornamental pieces I).
C designates the center leg, which is attached to the end of a lower cross-bar, O.
O designates an upper cross-bar attached to the extension-slides E.
F designates end pieces of the extensionframe, and F designates iron clamps through which the adjustable brackets A are adapted to slide vertically. The end pieces of the frame are provided with suitable handles f for extending the table.
G designates the side pieces of the extension-frame, and G sockets into which the slides E work.
D designates the center slide. d is a bolt connecting the extension-slides E to the center slide, D, said bolt working in a groove e in the extension-slide.
The extension-slides E and center slide, D, work upon rests or supports e. Iron clamps f are fastened in the corners of the framework and form L-shaped sockets adapted to receive the L-shaped portion of the upper end of the legs B extending around the recess b. An iron strap 9 crosses the inner side of the socket G at the outer end, and a similar iron strap g crosses the inner side of the socket G at the inner end, and a thumbscrew 9 holds the slides E in the sockets, the bottom of which is shown at 9 Fig. 4. The legs B are secured in the iron clamps f by means of a thumb-screw f and the brackets A are. dovetailed in the clamps F, so as to slide vertically and be set and fixed in different positions therein by a thumb-screw f (Shown in Fig. 8.) By removing or loosening the thumb-screws f the brackets A together with the shafts carrying the flexible top, may be lifted off the sliding frame, the pin a being thereby lifted out of the hole which it enters in the cross-piece C The corner legs also may be detached by removing the set-screw or pin f and the cross-bar O, which carries the center legs, may be detached by removing the set-screw d, and when so separated the several parts may be conveniently packed together for storage or shipment.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y 1. In a frame for extension tables the combination of side pieces G connected by end pieces, of sockets G having straps g 9 arranged as described, the extension-slides E provided with a groove, the center slides D having a bolt adapted to the groove of the extension-slide, thumb-screws for holding the slides in the sockets,- a cross-piece C connected with the center slides and held by a thumb-screw for supporting the center legs, and L-shaped sockets f fastened in the corners of the frame for attaching the legs B by means of thumb-screws as specified.
2. In an extension-table the combination ELLSXVORTH A. LOOMIS.
