UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE.
NATHAN N. MORGAN, OF LEAVENWORTH, INDIANA.
IRONING=BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,339, dated November 20, 1888.
Application filed February 4, 1887.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN N. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leavenworth, in the county of Crawford and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Ironing-Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to ironing-boards of that class designed to be folded into compact form when not in use.
The object of the invention is to produce an ironingboard which shall be simple in construction, and which may be folded into compact form in order to occupy a minimum amount of space when not in use.
Furthermore, the object of the invention is to produce an ironing-board which may be adjusted in height to meet the requirements of the user.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
I have illustrated the invention in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the board in position for use. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan View of the board proper, and Fig. 3 is aplan view showing the legs in a folded position.
In the drawings, 1A represents the board proper,upon the underside of which are placed cleats a 01, having any suitable number of notches or sockets for the reception of the upper portion of the supporting-legs. These notches are arranged one above the other, in order that by changing the position of the legs the board may be raised or lowered at one or both ends, as may be required in use.
Upon the under side of the board I mounta sliding arm, a, which slides longitudinally in Serial No. 226,515. (No model.)
a dovetailed groove formed by two pieces, a", secured to the under side of the board in any suitable manner. The purpose of this arm is to form a support for any articles of clothing upon which work is being done, and which is too large to be entirely supported and kept from the floor by the board. Another arm, a is hinged or otherwise secured to the under side of the board, and is capable of being swung out in order to aid in supporting articles upon which work is being done. The board is supported upon folding legs B and B, which are secured together by a pin, 1), or otherwise, passing about through their center. Each leg is made up with what may be termed a frame, consisting of the pieces provided with angular ends I) and the cross-pieces b by which the pieces are secured together. The frames are of such relative size that one is entirely inclosed by the other, so that when they are'folded they will occupy a minimum amount of space. The cross-pieces b upon the larger frame form stops for limiting the swinging of the smaller frame and holding it in compact position when folded.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a board provided on its under side near each end with transverse cleats having notches or sockets of different altitudes in their inner faces, of the detachable folding legs B and B, comprising the pieces provided with angular ends and connected by cross-pieces and pivotally connected, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NATHAN N. MORGAN.
