2 SHEETS-SHEET 2- WITNES'SES INVENTOR ANTON KRUGER, 0F GRAFTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING CRIB OR CRADLE.
Application filed March 7, 1916.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ANTON KRUGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grafton, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Cribs or Cradles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in folding cribs and cradles, and the objects thereof are to provide a cheap, simple and efficient crib or cradle, which can be folded into a small and compact form of the article to enable it to be conveniently carried for traveling, or placed out of the way, such as under beds, in a closet, etc., as well as one which will contain few parts and can be opened up or folded easily and quickly when desired.
To the accomplishment of 'these and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, in which the same reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a top plan view of a folding crib or cradle embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the crib, erected for use, and showing ends in folded position in dot and dash lines. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the handhold and attaching member. Fig. a is an enlarged perspective view of a hinged leg showing catch for holding same in erected position. Fig. 5 is an end view of a crib or cradle embodying this invention with rocker shown in dot and dash line. Fig. 6 is a modication of Fig. 4, using bracing rod for holding legs in erected position. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a crib or cradle with its several parts folded together. Fig. 8 is a plan view of a rocker illustrating method of attaching same to legs, with a portion of the rocker broken away. Fig. 9 is an enlarged plan view of the extension bracket with portions broken away.
As illustrated in the drawings, 1 represents the crib or cradle-which comprises the Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16, 191'?.
Serial No. 82,604.
two ends 2 and the two sides 3, the ends 2 being each formed into the upper end section t and the lower leg section 5. The crib or cradle 1 is provided with the main frame 6,v composing the side rails 7 and the end rails 8. The sides 2 are connected to the side rails 7 by vmeans of the hinges 9, and are adapted to fold inwardly toward each other when crib or cradle 1 is to be folded. The lower corners of the main frame G are provided with the extension brackets l0, fiXedly secured thereto by means of the screws 11, and the lower leg sections 5, of the ends 2, are pivotally attached to the extension brackets 1() by means of the threaded pins 12 and the wing nuts 13. rIhe upper end sections el and the lower leg sections 5 are connected by the hinges 111-, thereby permitting the upper end sections 4 to be swung downwardly.
For the purpose of holding the sides 3 and the upper end portions 4 in erected position, the sides 3 are provided with attaching members 15, fiXedly secured thereto by screws 18, and provided with the notches 16 adapted to engage the threaded pins 17, mounted in the upper end sections 4;. Wing nuts 19 hold said end sections and sides in secured position.
rlhe catches 20, pivotally secured by the screws 21 to the inner side of the upper end sections 4, are positioned directly opposite to the hinges 14. Mounted in the lower leg portions 5, are thepins 23, adapted to engage in the notches 24. The catches 20, overlapping the jointsl22 of the ends 2, will securely hold the lower leg portions 5 in erected position; said catches 2O being formed with the lip 25 provide a finger hold when it is desired to disengage and fold parts.
As shown in Fig. 3, the sides 3, in connection with the attaching members 15, provide a suitable opening 26, for the insertion of the hand when opening said crib or cradle or when adjusting wing nuts 19.
When it is desired to use this device as a cradle it will only be necessary to remove the casters 27, as are commonly used, and insert the Shanks 28, iixedly mounted on the rockers 29, into the sockets 30.
The plates 31, through which pass the pins 23, are secured to the inner side of the upper end sections 4 by the screws 32 to protect the covered portions from being marred when'manipulating the catches 20.
For folding the crib or cradle the operation is as follows: Loosen the wing nuts 19 thereby disengaging the notches 16, of the attaching members 15, from the pins 17 and allowing the sides 3 to be folded inwardly toward each other. Releasing catches 20 will permit the upper end portions t to be swung downwardly and overlap the lower leg sections 5, and by releasing the wing nuts 13, the lower leg sections 5, pivotally connected to the extension brackets 10, may be folded under the frame 6, thereby completing the folding operation as shown in Fig. 7.
It will readily be apparent that the improved crib or cradle as herein described can be used and operated by any unskilled person and when in its open position will form a substantial and strong structure, as well as onev which will be firmly and strongly braced, while when such crib or cradle is in its folded or closed position it will be evident that it will occupy a small and compact form or shape. The crib or cradle contains few parts, can be easily and cheaply manufactured and when in its folded or closed position the mattress used with the same or other bed clothing can be stored, packed and held in the space by the frame of the crib or cradle.
In the modification, illustrated in Fig. 6, bracing rods 33, passing through the eyelets or staples 34, are used to hold the lower leg sections in erected position.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A folding crib or cradle comprising a rectangular frame having corner extensions, side members hinged to said frame capable of folding inwardly, a pair of supporting legs at each end of said frame pivotally connected with'said extensions, each of said supporting legs formed of a pair of hinged sections foldable outwardly, ends carried by said pairs of legs and foldable outwardly therewith and said ends of legs capable of folding under said frame.

5. A folding crib or cradle comprising a rectangular' frame provided with corner eX- tensions, two pairs of supporting legs, means for pivotally connecting a pair of supporting legs with said extensions, each of said pair of supporting legs consisting of an upper and a lower section hinged together and with the upper section folding outwardly, an end connected to the upper sections of each pair of legs, side members pivotally connected to said frame and foldable inwardly, said pivots and extensions providing for folding said legs with said ends under said frame, and means for maintaining said legs extended.
6. A folding crib or cradle comprising a rectangular frame provided with corner extensions, side members hinged to said frame folding inwardly, two pairs of supporting legs,- means for pivotally connecting supporting legs with said extensions, each of said pair of supporting legs consisting of an upper and a lower section hinged together and with the upper sections folding outwardly, an end connected to the upper section of each pair of legs, said pivots and extensions providing for folding of said legs with said ends under said frame, means for maintaining said legs extended, and detachable means engaging with said side members and with the upper sections of said supporting legs for maintaining said side member in an upright position.
7, In a folding crib or cradle, the combination, comprising a rectangular frame provided with corner extension brackets, two pairs of supporting legs pivotally connected to the said extension brackets, an end hinged to and forming the upper section of each pair of supporting legs and folding outwardly, side members hinged to said f nected opposite the hinged portions of the said supporting legs and overlapping said hinged portions for holding said supporting legs yin erected position, said extension brackets and pivoted supporting legs providing for folding said supporting legs With said ends under said frame, substantially as described and set forth.
