STTES risrcn ANT TAB LE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 9, 1909.
Application filed March 3, 1908. Serial No. 418,928.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORIN J. Roenns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to folding tables, and has for its object to provide a table, that will be firm and strong and at the same time capable of being folded in such a manner as to occupy the minimum amount of space.
By the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawings, a table may be folded so as to occupy only about three inches of space.
The table is provided with four legs connected in pairs by horizontal cross-bars, the two pairs being pivoted together at the center of the horizontal cross-bars and adapted to swing horizontally on the pivot, the pairs being swung so that the horizontal crossbars will be at right angles with each other when the table is in use, but nearly paralleling each other when folded.
The top of the table, preferably round, is hinged to a piece extending cross-wise underneath or on the under side of the table top, to which cross bar is also pivoted the table legs. One side of the said cross-bar is made or surfaced to a slight angle so that one end of the said cross-bar is wider than the other end, the purpose of which will be hereinafter explained.
A catch is provided to retain the table in a folded position and a lug secured to the under surface of the table top against which one of the legs swings when the table is being unfolded for use to assure the legs being set at the proper places and the sets of legs at right angles with each other.
In the drawings, Figure 1, is a side elevation of the table when in a folded position, Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the table when set and ready for use, and Fig. 3, is a top view of the table parts when in a folded position with the table top removed.
The table legs 10 are connected in pairs by the horizontal cross bars 11, the two pairs pivoted together at the center of the horizontal cross bars 11 by the bolts or pins 12. The table top 13 is hinged to the cross-bar 14. The cross-bar 14 and the upper cross-bars 11 are pivoted together by the pin or bolt 12. When the table is in position for use as shown in Fig. 2, one of the upper cross-bars 11 rests l against the lug 15 secured to the under surface of the table top 13, the other of the upper cross bars 11 parallels the bar 14 directly underneath the same and is held in that position by means of the pin or bolt 16 passing through the end of the bar 14 and the top of one of the legs 10.
A special feature of my invention is the cross bar 14, made wide enough at one end to be flush with the table legs when folded to a nearly parallel position, and wide enough at the other end to have an abutment shoulder in addition thereto on one side as a rest for the legs and for added strength while the side to which the hinges are secured is flush with the outside of the table legs at both ends when folded to a nearly parallel position. This latter provision is necessary in order to permit of the proper folding of the table top against the sides of the legs. When it is desired to fold the table, the loose pair of legs are swung on the pivots 12 to a position the top of the plate 13 to a perpendicular position, the catch 17 secured to the table top 13 on the under surface thereof will engage the latch 18 secured to one of the upper cross-bars 11 and the table will be securely folded.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,
The combination with a table top of two pair of legs, the legs connected in pairs by means of horizontal cross-bars and the pairs pivoted together at the center of the cross bars, one pair made stationary with a crossbar hinged to the under surface of the table top and the other pair adapted to swing horizontally on the said pivot, the cross bar hinged to the under surface of the table top being wide enough at one end to be flush with the outside of the table legs when folded to a nearly parallel position and at the other end wide enough in addition thereto to provide a rest for the table legs when folded to a nearly parallel position, the table top adapted to fold on hinges against the sides of the legs, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
ORIN J. ROGERS.
