SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,756, dated April `3, 1894.
' Application iiled December 2, 1.893. `Serial No. 492,609. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern/.j y
Beit knownthatl, LUDWIG MAURER, a'citizen of the United States, residing at New York,in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Fasting-Tables and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and'exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereonwhich form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to tables and has for` its object the provision of a folding table that shall be strong and rigid when 'opened out, and capable of being compactly folded to enable it to be easily and conveniently carried in the hand, and to this end and others t appear said invention consists in the folding table constructed as hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my ltable opened out; Fig. 2, a bottom view with the legs folded-g Fig. 3, a detail section on line of Fig. 2. Fig. 4, is a, perspective View of the table folded for transportation; Fig. 5, a transverse section thereof.
The table top consists of two similar sections A, A, oblong in shape, and hinged` tofgether by a'pair of hingesB, B, on each side.
The hinges have stop projections b, b, as shown, to abut when the sections or leaves are opened' out to hold them in the same plane and Yprevent them bending or lowering under weight. Each section, as shown, has a ledge orliange a on all-four of its edges which projects below the under side of the section, and to the inner side of each side flange a of each section is pivoted a leg C. A second leg C is pivoted at its longitudinal l center to the longitudinal center of each leg C, on its innerside, whose upper end isslidingly secured to the yunderside of the table section by means ofv a laterally extending lug or pin cy and cleat D secured to said section and having a longitudinal slot d into which said pin extends. The free end of the pin is turned downward to engage the side of the cleat, to prevent its accidental withdrawal from the slot therein. The legs when opened ont for use are in the shapepof an X, while when folded they lie side by side against the under surface of the section or leaf between the side ledge and the adjacent cleat D, the space between these two being just wide enough to accommodate them thus by en gaging their sides, conne them against lateral play when folded. The thickness of the legs is such that ltheir outer sides, when'they are folded, are fiush with or within the plane of the outer surface of the ledges, so that there is no projection to prevent the two sec- 1 tions to be folded fiat against eachother as shown in Fig. 4. Each pair lof legs C, C is braced'y by a metal bar E whose upper end is pivoted to a block e secured to the under side of each section at its center near its end, and whose lower end is pivoted to the bolt that pivots said vlegs together. To prevent the legs slipping, their lower iioor engaging ends are tipped with rubber blocks F. One of the sections A, on its edge, has a hook g to engage' a pin on the other, when vthe table is folded, While for the convenient carriage of the same a handle or loop 71, is provided on the edge of one of the sections.
My table folds up very compactly, there are no projections, the legs cannot` possi bly open out accidentally, being completely housed, and there is abundant space afforded within the ledges a to carry articles such as overalls, scissors, dsc., such as are used by the paper hanger, for whose use the inven tion is especially designed, although, of course, it is not limited to this or any other use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, andv desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A folding table comprising in combination two hinged sections, each provided with two sets of legs pivoted together at their longitu'dinal centers, brace rods E pivoted to blocks on the under side'of the table sections and to the legs at their pivotal centers, the In testimonywhereof Iafx mysignature in said legs adapted to be folded S10 that; their presence of two witnesses. edges will lie in the same paralle planes and flush with the side cleats of the sections, the LUDWIG MAURER' 5 braces being folded between the edges of the Nitnessesz sets of legs, all substantially as shown and de- CHAS. MACHOLDT, scribed. DENISON P. CHESEBRO.
