FOLDING TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,738, dated December 23, 1884.
\ Application filed March 31, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WVALTER PELL,of Sioux Falls, in the county of Minnehaha, Dakota Territory, have invented a new and Improved Folding Table, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved folding table especially adapted for use by paper-hangers.
The invention consists in a folding table formed of four top plate-sections peculiarly hinged to each other, a leg being hinged to the under side of each section at the outer end, and a leg being hinged to one section at theinner end. The legs are provided with pivoted brace-rods. The sections are provided on the under sides with means for holding the legs when folded, and the sections are also provided on the under sides with pivoted buttons for holding implements, tools, &c.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved folding table, showing iterected. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the under side of the same, the legs at one end not being folded down. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same, showing it folded. Fig.4c is a transverse vertical section on linexm of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of'one of the hinges. r
The top plate of the table is formed of four sections, A A A A, of which the sections A and A and A and A are hinged to each other in such a manner that the under sides can be folded against each other. The sections A and A are hinged to each other at the inner and lower horizontal longitudinal edges by downwardly-projecting hinges B. The inner edges of the sections A and A are provided with notches O for receiving the free edges of the hinges B when the tableis folded, in the manner that will be set forth hereinafter. Handles or bails D are hinged to the outer side edges of the sections A and A A leg, E, is hinged on the inner side of each section at the outer end of the section, the legs E being adapted to be folded into recesses in the under sides of the sections. Buttons or latches F are pivoted on the under sides of the sections to hold the free ends of the legs when they are folded against the under sides of the sections.
Each leg is provided with a pivoted brace-rod, G. One leg E at each end of the table is provided with a brace-rod, H, provided on its free end with a hook, H, adapted to be passed into an apertured projection, J, on the opposite leg. When the legs are folded the bracerods G pass under bridges K, on' which the latches or buttons F are pivoted. On the under sides of the sections, and in the recesses formed in the under sides of the said sections, a series of buttons, L, are pivoted for holding brushes M, scissors N, a square, 0, dividers P, and other implements used by paper-hangers or other artisans.
of the inner edge with a pivoted hook, Q, adapted to catch on a stud, R, on the under side of the section A at the inner edge and outer end. The sections A A A A are pro-v vided on the upper surfaces and outer edges with graduated scales. The section A is provided at each end of its outer edge with a pivoted hook, S, adapted to catch on studs or pins T, arranged in a cross portion on the outer edge of the section A, for the purpose of holding the sections together when the table is folded. A middle legJV, is hinged to one of the sections at the inner end of the same.
WVhen the table is folded, the inner surfaces of the sections A and A and the inner surfaces of the sections A and A rest against each other, the hinges B passing into thenotches O. The sections are then folded in such a manner that the upper surfaces of the sections A and A rest against each other, and the sections are locked together by means of the hooks S.
The table can be folded very compactly, holds the tools and implements, and can be erected for use very easily and rapidly.
To permit the parts forming the top of .the table to be folded together with the limited number of hinges shown, the hinges B are provided with shanks about twice as large as found in ordinary butthinges. The portion I) of the hinge farthest from the eye I) is pro vided with perforations for the passage of screws to fasten said hinge to the edge of the sections of the top, and also with a flange, b at right angles to the leaves of the hinge, through der surface of the table, and thus any strain The section A is provided on its under side and at the outer end which shief screws can be driven into the unupon the hinge is prevented. XVhen thehinge l B is made of cast metal, the portions 1) b" can be easily produced; but when made of wrought metal each shelf b is usually split transversely into three parts, and only the middle portion is made to occupy the portion shown at Z) in Fig. 5.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-.-
1. The top of a folding table, composed of the sections A A, provided with notches O in the edges thereof, to form openings between them, sections A and A, hinged to one end of sections A A, and hinges B, connecting the sections A A said hinges being provided with a long shank projecting from the face or frame of said sections a distance substantially equal to the thickness of the sections A A",
and arranged to pass through the openings formed by the notches O, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The top of a folding table, composed of the sections A A, provided with notches G in the edges thereof, sections A A", hinged to one end of sections A A and hinges 13, connecting the sections A A, said hinges being provided with a long shank having flanges b at a distance from the joint of the hinge substantially equal to the thicknes of the sections A A", and said hinges being spaced to pass through the openings formed by the notches O, substantially as described.
