SCAFFOLD-TRESTLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,095, dated November 1, 1881,

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, THOMAS S.REYBURN, of Kansas City, Missouri, in the county of Jackson, and JEROME B. SWEETLAND, of Pontiac, in the county of Oakland, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scaffolding Benches or Trestles for Masons andBuilders Use; and we dohereby declarethat the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part. of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in trestles or scaffold-benches for the use of brick-layers, masons, and others and it has for its object to provide a trestle which may be folded for convenience of storage and transportation, and which may be held in such folded position while being lowered or elevated through a building, as more fully hereinafter specified. This object we attain by the apparatus illustrated in the accompanyiugdrawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of our improved trestle, and Fig. 2 an end elevation of the same.

The letter A indicates the legs of the trestle. These are secured at their upper ends to the horizontal beams B, and are braced thereto by means of the braces c. The upper ends of the legs are connected by means ofhinges D in such manner that they may be folded together for packing, transportation,or handling, or set apart when required for use.

The letter E indicates two ropes passing through apertures in the legs. These ropes are knotted at their extremities at one side of the trestle, so as to be secured therein. The

portion passing through the other legs is knotted at such point as to allow the legs to be opened out a sufficient distance to permit the trestle to stand properly, the ropes being extended beyond thelast-mentioned knots, so as to serve as a means for handling the trestle and lowering or elevating it through a building, the legs being automatically drawn to gether when the trestle is thus manipulated, so that it may readily pass between thejoists or through other narrow spaces. The lower ends of the legs are provided with blocks F on the outside. These serve, when the trestles are packed together, to hold said legs and prevent them from swinging on their hinges and any consequent injury which would occur if they were left loose at their extremities. The

' blocks also serve to preventthe legs from splitting lengthwise, as they form battens extend- I in g transversely across the said legs.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

Afolding scaffold or trestle consisting of two parts, each part being provided with diagonal strengthening-braces, and battens attached to the legs thereof, the said sections or parts being hinged together at their top, and having stop cords or ropes for retaining them in a set position, as shown and described.
