DOOR-HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS 0. Dennis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Las Animas, in the county of Bent and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to door holders especially adapted to be used by painters for painting and graining doors, the ObJGCt being to provide a door holder which is so constructed that the door will be held in such a position that the same can be readily operated on by the painter.

Another object of my invention is to provide a door holder which can be folded into a small space so that the same can be readily carried from place to place.

A further object of the invention is to provide a door holder which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction and one 1n which the parts are so connected that all danger of the parts becoming accidentally separated is prevented.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a door holder which will be held in a set up position by the weight of the door so that all danger of the same collapsing so as to let the door fall is prevented.

Still another object is to provide a door holder in which the folding sections are so mounted that when folded the sections will lock each other.

WVit-h these various objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im- 40 ,proved door holder, showing the same in hinge D said base being provided with pivotally mounted supporting members E, F and G which are adapted to support the base above the surface on which the holder is arranged so that the door when placed thereon can be readily operated upon as will be hereinafter described.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Secured to the sides of the section C at its free end are plates H which extend above the top of the section 0 and between which is pivotally mounted an upright I on a pivot pin I extending through the plates H and the lower end of the upright I is rounded so as to allow the same to swing on its pivot in order that the same can be folded down upon the section C when not in use. For locking the upright I in a vertical position I provide a sectional brace J formed of two sections pivotally connected together at J the free ends of each section being pivotally mounted respectively on the side of the upright I and the section C and it will be seen that the brace is so formed that when the upright is moved into a vertical position the brace will lock itself so as to hold the upright firmly so that all danger of the same moving is prevented. The plates H prevent the door when placed upon the base from slipping off of the same and secured to the sides of the section B of the base are plates K which form stops for the door so that when the edge of the door is placed upon the base between the plates H and K it will be held on the hinge D of the base in such a manner that it will be imposslble for the door to slip off of the same sidewise.

Secured to the upper end of the upright I 1s a hinge L the free member L of which 1s provided with a notch L and has a correspondingly notched block M secured thereto which is adapted to engage the opposite face of the upright I so as to hold the same firmly in a horizontal position, it of course being understood that the member L of the hinge will rest on the top of the upright I but by providing the member with a block as shown the same is held more firmly. This member forms means for supporting the door at its upper edge when arranged on the base and the wedge shaped notch is of such a size that it will fit over the edge of the door when swung into the position shown in Fig. 1 so as to support the door in a vertical position without any danger of it wabbling or moving in any way when being operated upon.

To relieve the strain of the upright I provide the same with chains N which are connected at their lower ends to screws N carried by the ends of the supporting member G so that the lateral strain on the upright will be relieved by the chains so that all danger of the upright becoming broken by pressing on the door when arranged within the holder is prevented.

Then it is desired to fold the holder so that the same can be readily carried or packed into a small space, the section B is folded upon the section C and the guide plates K will extend down alongside of the edges of the section C so as to hold the same therein and by pressing upwardly on the sectional brace the standard can be folded down upon the section C until the hinge L carried thereby is brought into engagement with the beveled end B of the section B which will lock the section B on the section C as clearly shown and by turning or swinging the supporting member E until the end of the same is brought over the hinge L the standard I will be locked and by swinging the supporting members E and G around until they are brought into alinement with the section C the holder will be folded in such a manner that it can be readily packed for shipment or carried without any trouble.

From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a folding door holder which is so constructed that a door can be readily held upon its edge within the same in such a manner that a painter can readily paint or grain the door as the door will be held above the surface of the ground by the supporting members in such a manner that all portions of the door can be readily reached.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A door holder comprising a sectional base having pivotally mounted supporting members, a standard pivotally mounted on one end of said base, means for holding said standard in a vertical position and a member connected to the upper end of said stand ard by a hinge, said member forming means for holding a door.

2. A door holder comprising a sectional base having pivoted supporting members, a

ard provided with means for engaging and I holding a door.

3. A folding door holder comprising a sectional base formed of two sections connected together by a hinge adapted to be folded upon itself, a standard pivotally connected to one end of said base adapted to be folded upon said base, a hinge carried by said standard provided with a holding member, said hinge engaging a section of said base for holding the same when folded, and a pivoted supporting member carried by the short section of said base adapted to engage said hinge for holding said standard.

4. A folding door holder comprising a base formed of two sections of unequal length pivotally connected together, sup porting members pivotally carried by said sections, stop members carried by said sec tions, a pivoted standard mounted between one pair of said stop members, a sectional brace for holding said standard in a vertical position, chains connected to said standard having their lower ends connected to one of said supporting members and a hinge carried by said standard carrying a member forming means for holding a door on said base.

5. A folding door holder comprising a sectional base having a pivoted standard mounted thereon adapted to be folded upon the sections said base being provided with pivoted supporting members, one of said supporting members forming means for locking'said sections in a folded position, a sectional brace for holding said standard in a vertical position and means carried by said standard for supporting a door on said base.
