WILLIAM F. son'rr, or ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING CARPENTERS-AND JOINERS JACK..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,562, dated October 13, 1903.
Application led February l0, 1903. Serial No. 142,793. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may con/cern:
Be itknownthat LWILLIAM F. Sonrv,a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the `county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improveniente in Folding Carpenters and Joiners Jacks; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itV appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specication.
My invention relates to improvements in folding carpenters and joiners jacks, and has for its object the production of a folding portable jack mechanism adapted to support a door or window in an upright position while the same is being iitted and when not in use to be folded'up, so as to occupy but little space.
The features of my invention are hereinafter fully set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sideelevation, inv slight perspective, of my improved folding jack, showing in dotted lines av door secured therein. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of one section of the same.
In the construction of my invention I provide an upright post A, which is bifurcated at its lower end, so as to .form feet a a. To sustain the post A in an upright position when in use, I pivot legs B B to the upper part thereof by means of a bolt and thumbnut a, which legs when in use are secured in an inclined position by hinged braces b b and b', secured at one end by eyebolts and at the other end by hooks thereon engaging eyes on the upright A and one of the legs B.'
Upon the upright A,`I place clamping-jaws C C',which are adjustable thereon and are secured thereto by means of thumb-screws c c. The lower clamp O is provided with a web or plate c' across its lower face, upon which the end of a door or sash secured therein can rest. Both the upper and lower clamping-jaws are fitted with clamp-screws D, having on their inner ends face-plates d to prevent marrin g the surface of the wood clamped therein and on their outer ends hand-wheels d' for operating the same; but they may be operated in any other convenient manner.
For supporting the opposite end of the door or sash in a levelposition when the same is secured in the clamps C C', l provide an upright post E, the lower end of which is bifurcated, so as to form feet e c. This upright E is further sustained in an upright position by means of-an inclined leg or brace F, removably secured to the upright by means of a sleeve F and thumb-screw f. Upon the VB B, and e c somewhat sharpened, so that the same will not slip easily upon a floor when it is necessary to plane the edge of a door orrsash supported in the jack.
'In operation the jack-sections are placed upon the iioor with the legs B B and F in a bracing position, as shown in the'drawings,
The lower clamps C' and G are then adjusted upon the uprights A and E at the elevation desired. The door or sash to be fitted is then placed thereon between the clamping-plates d and d2 and the jaws of the clamps C and G. The upper portion of one end of the door or sash is also secured in the clamp C. The clamping-screws D D and D are then turned until the door or sash is securely fastened in both sections of the jack. When the .jack is not in use, the parts thereof can be folded together in such Va compact shape as to be conveniently portable. l
' Having thus fully described my invention, so as to enable others to construct and utilize the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
The combination in a folding carpenters jack of an upright having its lower end bifurcated and inclined outward, brace-legs piv- Aand the braces b b and b hooked securely in .the eyebolts thereon.
ICO
otally secured to the upper part of said upright, detachable braces between the lower parts of the legs, and between `the legs and the upright, screw-adjusted clamping-jaws mounted upon the upper and lower portions of said upright, both of which clamping-jaw mechanisms are also vertically adjustable thereon, whereby a door or sash of any size can be secured and rmly held thereby substantially as set forth. 1o
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM F. SOETY. Witnesses:
G. J. MEAD, CHARLES A. MERTENS.
