No. 595,284. Patented 1300.7, 1897.
EZWLBQ Attorney Unirnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HELEN BAUM, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
COMBINATION TABLE AND DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,284, dated December 7, 1897.
Application filed January '7, 1897. Serial No. 618,336. (No model.)
T0 ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HELEN BAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Table and Desk; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to a novel construction in a bracket or table attachment for furniture, and is adapted more especially for use in connection with bedsteads and for the purpose of providing a table or desk for the use of people who are confined to a bed.
The invention consists in the features of construction hereinafter described and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the head-board of a bed provided with this improvement. Fig. 2 is a detail elevation, and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views that will be understood in connec tion with the following description.
Although this invention can be applied to various pieces of furniture, yet as a convenient illustration I have selected an iron bedstead and will refer to the same in the following description.
Referring now to the said drawings, 1 indicates one of the posts of the bedstead, and 2 and 3 the arms of the bracket. These arms are hinged together, and the inner arm 2 is hinged to the post 1, while two brace-rods 4 and 5 are employed that are also hinged to each other and suitably connected to the post and with the outer end of the arm 3. The clamps 6, that hold the bracket to the post 1, consist of two members 7 and 8. These members are hinged together and are provided with the a-pertured lugs 9 and bolt and setscrew 10 for holding them together. The inner faces of the members 7 and 8 of the clamp are lined with felt or other soft material to prevent injury to the post of the bed. One of the members 7 is provided with aproj ection 11, having an opening therein to receive the pintle of the arm 2 or the brace 5. Between the ends of the arms and the ends of the brace that are connected together there is an upright rod 12 to further strengthen the parts, as is obvious. The outerarm 3 is preferably squared, as shown, so that the sliding block 13 can move back and forth upon same with out liability of tipping. The table or board 14: is carried by the sliding block, and to tilt the same a clutch is situated between the table or board It and the sliding block 13. This clutch consists of two members 15, connected, respectively, with the block and with the board and controlled by set-screws, as shown. As shown in Fig. 1, the said bracket can be so swung that the table or board is brought in front of the head-board of the bed to be used as a desk or for serving meals and the like. When the device is not used, the inner arm can be turned out against the wall, while the outer arm can be turned back upon the inner arm and the board moved to an upright position. It is seen that with the employment of a different form of clamping the said bracket can be attached to wooden bedsteads or'other pieces of furniture, as is obvious.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A bracket consisting of the clamps 6 arranged one above the other and consisting of two pivoted members 7 and 8 having apertured lugs 9 and a set-screw 10 extending through said lugs, one member of each of said clamps being provided with a projection 11 having an opening therein, an inner arm 2 having a pintle situated within the opening in the projection 11 of the upper clamp 6, a brace-rod 5 having a pintle situated within the opening in the projection 11 of the lower clamp 6, an outer arm 3 and a brace-rod t connected together at their outer ends, the outer ends of the inner arm 2 and brace-rod 5 and the inner ends of the outer arm 3 and brace-rod 4: being pivoted together by means of an upright rod 12, a plurality of openings in said inner arm 2, a bar pivoted to said outer arm 3 and provided with a hook end to enter said opening in the arm 2, the said outer arm 3 being square in cross-section, a sliding block 13 having a square opening through which the outer arm 3 extends, a clutch mem- In testimony whereof I have signed this ber 15 carried by said block 13, a table or specification in the presence of two subscribboard 14 having a clutch member 15 on its ing Witnesses.
lower side, a thumb-screw passing through HELEN BAU M. 5 said clutch members 15 and serving as a pivot, Witnesses:
and means for holding said clutch members S. O. DIMON,
